'Downton Abbey': Mary 'wishes she was as cold as she pretends to be,' says EP
Check out this behind-the-scenes video of the "Downton Abbey" cast and creator talking about the latest happenings, including Branson's dalliance with Edna, Lady Mary's proposal and Lady Edith's night with Michael Gregson.
"She's a minx. What a minx. ... I can't allow this little minx to completely ruin him and ruin this family," says Phyllis Logan of the Edna Braithwaite character, with Allen Leech adding that he loves that Mrs. Hughes is Tom's go-to person.
"The storyline with Edna shows just how alone he is and how isolated he is in this house. It was a great way of capturing just how abandoned he is," says Leech.
Poor Tom. He's just so lonely, as are the Crawley sisters, to some extent. Laura Carmichael says it's so hard for Lady Edith because of the time period, when "one's reputation is so important," while creator Julian Fellowes says that Mary is feeling disloyal to her late husband Matthew.
"I think Mary mistrusts emotion because she doesn't like being out of control," says Fellowes. "With Gillingham, she is very, very strongly physically attracted to this man, which makes her uncomfortable because she feels so disloyal to Matthew that she should be physically attracted to anyone. I think she wishes she was as cold as she pretends to be."
"Downton Abbey" airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS.
