Candice Accola talks 'The Vampire Diaries' Season 5 premiere: Caroline's college crises, missing Tyler, and more
Get ready for "The Vampire Diaries" college years, as Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Caroline (Candice Accola) head to Whitmore College in the Season 5 premiere Thursday (Oct. 3) to begin their freshman year as functional vampires. Too bad things don't go as smoothly as Caroline was hoping ...
The two Mystic Falls grads quickly learn in "I Know What You Did Last Summer" that life as a vampire in higher education has its own problems, Accola warns Zap2it. "When we come into Season 5, Caroline's main objective is to just get to college, find the perfect dorm room, have an amazing year with her boyfriend and with Bonnie and Elena, and basically just have the best freshman year of college experience ever," Accola says. "She's got a bed picked out for Elena, a bed picked out for her, and a bed picked out for Bonnie. The audience is more caught up than Caroline is. She doesn't know that Bonnie is dead, so she's waiting for Bonnie to show up to college and the possibility that there is another roommate instead is something she doesn't anticipate."
Bonnie has been pretending to be alive all summer for her friends' and father's sakes, having Jeremy -- who can see and speak to ghosts -- email everyone on her behalf. But when she doesn't turn up at Whitmore, Caroline and Elena start to ask questions. "Caroline and Elena are pretty much more focused on other things, and Bonnie's death would be the farthest that they'd ever expect," Accola reveals. "So they're not going to be tuned in for quite some time. How they would react to the news that Bonnie's dead? That is something the viewers will have to see."
Another person Caroline is waiting on to show up at college? Her boyfriend, Tyler, who starts off Season 5 helping out a werewolf pack in the Appalachian Mountains with plans to meet Caroline at Whitmore for the start of classes. "I think Caroline 100% believes that Tyler is going to come to college with her," Accola says. "I love that story line because I think it rings very true to what a lot of students and young people go through with new experiences when they move to a new city and start a new life, and all they've known is this old life that becomes a security blanket. And especially because first love is so hard because you fall so deep and you think it's the end-all-be-all, so she's really holding on so tight to this idea that they can make it forever and ever. 100%, Caroline believes that Tyler is going to come to college." Will Tyler make it to Whitmore before the end of the premiere? That remains to be seen.
In addition to waiting for her MIA boyfriend and best friend to show up to college, Caroline and Elena will find out very quickly that life on campus as a vampire comes with a whole new set of issues ... and Accola teases they will encounter issues during the premiere and long after. "Otherwise it would be a very boring show if they just went to college and everything worked out absolutely perfect for them," Accola says. "There is going to be a lot of issues that come up because they are trying to live in a world where being who they really are isn't out in the open and isn't accepted, and they're trying to keep their persona under wraps. Whereas in Mystic Falls, they had a regime. They know how to live. But this is new territory. So it's not always going to go right. They're going to make mistakes and they're going to have to fix them."
Something fans are going to notice missing from the Season 5 premiere are three faces that have become an integral part of "TVD": the Original vampire siblings Klaus, Elijah, and Rebekah (seeing as how they're getting their own hour after the Season 5 premiere airs). Accola promises that there is enough drama and new characters introduced in the premiere to balance out the lack of Originals. "I definitely miss them personally as actors, seeing them around set, but we have so much to show in the premiere without their stories," Accola says. "Knowing that we can watch their story lines on Tuesday nights or right after our season premiere and still continue to be a part of their world will definitely set some minds at ease. And since we're entering the college years and meeting new characters, and we're being introduced to all these new worlds with good guys and bad guys I think we're going to be quite entertained even without them."
