'Carrie Diaries' Season 2 scoop: How will Carrie Bradshaw meet Samantha Jones?
"Sex and the City" fans are anxiously awaiting Season 2 of "The Carrie Diaries" for one major reason: the introduction of iconic character Samantha Jones. The CW prequel series cast newcomer Lindsey Gort to portray the role originated by Kim Cattrall, and though we've only had one look at Gort's new take on the influential part, we're already confident that she was the right -- and only -- choice.
So now that the new Samantha has been found, how will the series tackle the tough job of showing how a young Carrie Bradshaw (AnnaSophia Robb) meets her future BFF? "The Carrie Diaries" costume designer Eric Daman revealed the story line behind the all-important meeting of the two fashion-forward minds, and it's just as amazing -- and intriguing -- as we hoped it would be.
"[Samantha's] a girl from Florida, and she's not the couture cougar we know Samantha Jones to be. She has a different background than the other girls, plus she's a bit older," Daman tells Teen Vogue. "She's related to [Carrie's nemesis] Donna LaDonna, which is how she gets introduced to Carrie. They meet up in Manhattan where Sam's part of the music scene, and I can't give too much away about the plot line, but it's very exciting."
Daman is also excited to be able to explore a much different fashion atmosphere thanks to Samantha's past. "It's a great episode that introduces Samantha as this '80s hair band video chick with tiny leopard print tops and acid-wash miniskirts and pointy Manolos," Daman says. "She's a really great addition to the cast, and her look represents a great moment in time that still feels current."
While Samantha Jones is always at the height of fashion, that will mean something a little bit different than her polished and professional style on "SATC." "When we met Samantha in 'Sex and the City,' she's older and her style's more elevated, but in 'The Carrie Diaries,' she's in fringed T-shirts and leather skirts and layers of chunky studded belts," Daman says. "She's growing up in the rock world, getting her first taste of power, and the power suits she wears in the '90s are definitely a carryover of those from the '80s. Most people stop evolving fashion-wise when they think they've hit their peak, and I think Samantha did that. Her look always had that '80s throwback, and I think that's because that era was was her fashion heyday."
So how will Samantha's style and personal affect Carrie this season? Daman says that the young aspiring fashion icon will be greatly influenced by the introduction of her future friend. "In 'The Carrie Diaries,' Carrie's coming into herself and experimenting, while Samantha's character is already very established when we meet her. She's the Samantha Jones we know with tons of wit and sass," Daman says. "She doesn't mind showing a little skin, while Carrie is just starting to try out that sort of thing. Samantha's way of dressing --and being -- is definitely going to have an affect on Carrie. I think Carrie's signature black bra and the tank tops from the original series are a nod to Samantha's style."
And now that Carrie will have just completed her first summer living in Manhattan, Daman says that we can expect to see her style drastically change to reflect that. "We're going to grow Carrie up a little bit. She'll experiment with body-con, which is inspired by Samantha," Daman reveals. "You'll see trends from the '80s that are really current now like crop tops, dresses with cutouts, and sheer blouses with bras underneath. And it all has something to do with Carrie spending her summer in the city. Your first summer in the city will definitely have an effect on your style!"
"The Carrie Diaries" returns for Season two on Friday, Oct. 25, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
