'Dog and Beth: On the Hunt': The Chapmans return
It's the news that "Dog the Bounty Hunter" fans have been waiting for: Duane "Dog" Chapman, wife Beth and son Leland return to the home screen in the new Country Music Television series "Dog and Beth: On the Hunt," which premieres Sunday, April 21.
The show focuses on the three Chapmans as they crisscross the nation teaching struggling bail bond agencies how to succeed in the embattled trade and helping them hunt down some of America's most dangerous criminals.
While "On the Hunt" highlights the Chapmans' proven bounty-hunting methods and Leland's expertise in nonlethal weaponry, it will also address the family's changing dynamic. "The focal point of the show is Duane and I, our relationship -- and subsequently our relationship with Leland," Beth tells Zap2it. "He wants to be the one staying right here and doing what he does, so we were really happy about that."
The Chapmans say the premise of the show is based on the realization that their popular A&E Network series led to a boom in new bail agents, many of whom were not properly trained for the job. "There are all kinds of ways to use trickery to capture someone without hurting them," says Beth, who serves as senior vice president of the Professional Bail Agents of the United States. "At the end of the day, bail bonds and bounty hunting is about money. And we're not going to kill for money."
Dog admits when he first began capturing criminals on TV, he feared the audience would resent that mantra of mercy. "I didn't want them to see me fixing the schmuck - getting a Band-Aid for his toe or a rag to wipe his head," he says. "I thought they would think, 'Oh, Dog is throwing the pearls before the swine!' But at least half of the attraction for the show was redemption." Redemption that continues on in "Dog and Beth: On the Hunt."
"Some people just learn the hard way, but no one has ever taken the two minutes to figure out what the root of his problem is and help him get back on track," Leland says. "That's something that my dad has specialized in."
