'Arrested Development' Season 1, episode 13 - 'Beef Consomme'
Welcome to "Arrested Development" Rewatch. Leading up to the release of Season 4, Zap2it will be taking a look back at the 53 episodes that made "AD" one of our most beloved TV comedies. Watch the first three seasons of "Arrested Development" on Netflix. Today we're covering the Season 1 episode "Beef Consomme," which premiered Feb. 15, 2004.
"Beef Consomme" focuses on the rivalry between Michael and GOB that continues to be a plot point throughout all of "Arrested Development." This time they're fighting over GOB's girlfriend Marta, who makes her last appearance in the series in this episode. Jason Bateman and Will Arnett's chemistry is a high point of the episode, and it's clear why they've remained friends in real life even after "Arrested Development" went off the air. Also, Michael Cera is as creepy as he's ever been as George Michael in "Beef Consomme."
Plot: After Michael realizes that GOB's girlfriend Marta -- who he has had a crush on since he met -- is interested in him as well, the duo tries to find the way to break the news to GOB. GOB, meanwhile, tries to figure out who "hermano" is, confronting someone on Marta's TV show before Michael finally comes clean. George Sr. heads to his arraignment hearing, and Buster continues to rebel against Lucille by attempting to be punched in the face. He also does his best to try to win over Marta. Michael, GOB and Buster end up fighting in front of the arraignment court house over Marta, and she walks in on it and decides she doesn't want to be involved with any of them. Back at the model home, George Michael tries to figure out if Maeby is actually adopted and Lindsay helps Tobias overcome his never-nude complex.
Bluth Company status: George Sr.'s arraignment hearing takes place and he needs his whole family to come and appear to be happy. Instead, Michael and GOB end up interuptting the event with a fist fight. During the hearing, George Sr. tries to run away after hearing all of his charges listed against him in one fell swoop, but ends up accidentally escaping right into his prison cell.
Notable guest stars: Henry Winkler as Barry Zuckerkorn and Patricia Velasquez as Marta.
Memorable line: "Yeah, well I let my fists do the talking. Not this [right] one, because obviously I need it for coin tricks and stuff, but this [left] one, I let it speak for both." -- GOB
Milestones: Tobias finally takes off his denim shorts -- and protective sock -- and he and Lindsay become intimate for the first time in years.
Most sexual tension: Marta and Michael resolve that they have feelings for one another, but she is still dating GOB. They try to consummate their attraction for one another, but that turns out to be harder than it seems.
Allusions to Tobias being gay: Tobias tries to explain sex to George Michael, but starts his description with the line, "When a man needs to prove to a woman he's actually..." Also, Tobias seems to actually be a hermaphrodite.
Best narrator commentary: "George Sr., having never heard his charges listed consecutively in one sitting, panicked and ran with great intensity. ... Barry too felt overwhelmed by the charges leveled against his client, and also took flight."
Next on "Arrested Development": Tobias overcompensates for the fact he's not a never-nude anymore by being naked all the time.
