'American Idol' Top 9 interview: Candice Glover gets everything to 'Come Together' for Beatles week
Once again, Candice Glover blew off the roof with her performance during Beatles Week of "American Idol" Season 12. Candice strayed away from the norm -- almost everyone else chose the more somber songs from the Fab Four -- and gave a spirited rendition of "Come Together." We talked to Candice after the performance to see how she felt.
You did a fantastic job tonight.
Candice Glover: Thank you!
You were one of the few people to do an up-tempo song. What factored into that song choice?
Candice Glover: I did not grow up listening to The Beatles at all, so it was really hard for me when I heard that the theme was going to be The Beatles. I knew that being on the show you were going to come across things that you didn't really know, but I was just kind of dreading it. The Beatles are amazing, but I just wasn't familiar with it.
I heard "Come Together" when they gave us the song choices and I was like, "Oh my God, I can really groove to this!" But then I got the lyrics sheet and I'm like, "What in the world! What is this song talking about?" And I didn't know!
A lot of people wonder about those lyrics...
Candice Glover: Yeah! Like multi-fingers and toe jam and stuff like that! And I'm like, I don't know...
They were in their experimental phase at that point.
Candice Glover: I don't know what was going on, but it's a rocking song and it was out of my comfort zone, but I think I did a pretty good job. I did my best.
Do you think Candy Raquel came out tonight?
Candice Glover: I think she did. A little bit! A little bit, but I think Nicki wanted her to come out a little bit more because she was like, "Give me some attitude!" I thought it was a fun song so I was smiling all over the place, but she wants me to show more attitude.
What kind of style were you trying to go for with the song?
Candice Glover: Well I definitely love the idea that I have the electric guitar and the cute guys playing the guitar next to me. In rehearsal I was like, "Woo, I like this!"
But I put a little bit of R&B, like somebody said Aretha meets The Beatles, so I kind of put the soul into it at the same time with a little bit of a growl and stuff like that. I just wanted to put my Candy stamp on it!
Was it more nerve-wracking going into this week's performance knowing you were in the Top 3 last week?
Candice Glover: Yes. It was very, very nerve-wracking. And I was very nervous because when you make the Top 3 once, you want to always make the Top 3 and it's a lot of pressure on you. You want to do a good job and you want America to still love you.
That's why knowing it was The Beatles I was like, "Oh my God, I'm going to be in last place this week!" I was like, "I'm going to do horrible!" I'm my worst critic and I was just doubting myself, but once we got the song together and I learned the crazy lyrics, we got the arrangement together, everything worked out. Everything "Came Together!"
How did you feel making Top 3 last week?
Candice Glover: Just to know that America liked me... Like Ryan said, I'm from an island. And just to know that even more than that small little island of 7000 people that I live on, more people than that voted for me and voted me up into the Top 3 -- I never even knew that all these people would know who I was!
And I'm like, "Oh my God they really love me!" I felt really good and I appreciate it and I just love everyone who supports me. I am so grateful to have them -- my Candy Canes is what I call them!
"American Idol" will announce the Top 9 results on Wednesday, March 21 at 8pm on FOX.
