'Southland' DVD clip: Producers discuss L.A. and following your gut
"Southland" is about a lot of things -- the day-to-day work of police officers, how personal things can affect professional conduct -- but it's also very much about the city of Los Angeles.
"One of the things we're interested in is the multi-ethnic quality of Los Angeles," creator Ann Biderman says in this clip (exclusive to Zap2it) from the show's mega-DVD box set (Seasons 2, 3 and 4 in one package) that hits stores Tuesday (Feb. 5). She, executive producer Christopher Chulack and technical adviser Chic Daniel are discussing the Season 2 episode "U-Boat," in which Ben Sherman (Ben McKenzie) patrols for the first time without his training officer, John Cooper (Michael Cudlitz).
One of the cases he handles solo is that of a missing Korean girl, and it forces him to go against procedure. "The theme in a way is what do you do when you're told not to do something, and your instinct is telling you very strongly that you have the answer to something," Biderman says.
Ben's growth as a police office is, of course, the through-line for much of "Southland." You can see how he handles the situation in "U-Boat," and how he's progressing, on the DVD and Blu-ray set. It goes on sale Tuesday, and Season 5 of "Southland" premieres on TNT on Feb. 13.
