'Bates Motel' trailer: Norman Bates and his mother, Norma, enter the 21st Century

A&E's first official trailer for "Bates Motel" isn't quite as in-depth as the trailer-y featurette released back in December, but it does a good job of teasing the vibe of the creepy, mysterious new series inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho."

Here's the (slightly) confusing thing: "Bates" is a prequel to the events of "Psycho," exploring the twisted relationship between a teenage Norman Bates (Freddie Highmore) and his messed-up mama Norma (Vera Farmiga). But this prequel is set in the present day, despite the fact that "Psycho" rocked the movie world back in 1960.

Obviously the show doesn't want to be too tied-in to the events of Hitchcock's movie and based on the pilot, which we've already seen, that seems like a smart move. The creative team explained a little more during January's Television Critics Association press tour.

Mark your calendars to find out for yourself when "Bates Motel" premieres March 18 on A&E.
