'Archer': Season 5 gets FX greenlight; Emmy category shifts

lana-archer-season-4-premiere-fugue-and-riffs-fx.jpgSterling Archer totally called this one: FX has renewed animated comedy hit "Archer" for Season 5.

The show about the dysfunctional inner-workings at international spy agency ISIS is currently the #2 series on cable in the men 18-34 demo, behind only "The Walking Dead," and routinely wins its timeslot in that demo against all TV competition. For the season to date, "Archer" has seen its ratings rise 44% in adults 18-34 and 36% in adults 18-49 from the previous season.

It may not be a coincidence that previous seasons of "Archer" are available on Netflix Instant streaming for new viewers to discover. The Season 5 order is for the customary 13 episodes.

Additionally, FX announced they plan to submit the current Season 4 of "Archer" for Outstanding Comedy Series consideration at this year's Emmy Awards. An animated show can only submit itself in a single series category and most (including "South Park," "The Simpsons," etc.) choose Outstanding Animated Program. However, FOX's "Family Guy" is routinely submitted for Outstanding Comedy Series consideration and earned one nomination in the category in 2009.

"Archer" has only received a single Emmy nomination in its three seasons of eligibility: a 2010 Outstanding Voice-Over Performance nom for star H. Jon Benjamin.
