SAG Awards 2013: 'Downton Abbey' bests 'Boardwalk Empire' in drama ensemble category
The Screen Actors Guild Awards honored the "Downton Abbey" cast with Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. The cast members appeared genuinely surprised when their show was announced as the category's winner, and the acceptance speech by Phyllis Logan -- who is outstanding as Mrs. Hughes -- proved it.
Logan delivered the acceptance backed by castmates Michelle Dockery (one of Zap2it's Worst Dressed nominees), Sophie McShera (who plays young Daisy), Amy Nuttall (Ethel) and Allen Leech (Branson).
"We are so not expecting this," says Logan. "Shut the french windows." As the audience giggled, Logan continued, "We would like to thank, first of all, SAG for even bothering to consider us ... We're just so overwhelmed by it all."
The British drama beat out "Homeland," Mad Men," Breaking Bad," and "Boardwalk Empire," whose cast won the honor the previous two years. Still Logan, on behalf of the entire "Downton" cast, gave a gracious nod to the crews of all those other shows. She explained "Downton Abbey's" ensemble would not be complete without their crew, and was quick to pay homage to "all of your wonderful crews too, I'm sure."
Cheers to the "Downton" cast. A deserving ensemble if there ever was one.
