'Barter Kings' Steve McHugh admits to a flair for gambling
Back when Steve McHugh, one-half of the duo of trading pros on A&E Network's Wednesday hit "Barter Kings," was in the car business, he didn't actually try to sell anything.
He recalls, "That's where my 'It is what it is' attitude comes into play -- there are just some things you can't control. You can take people on a test-drive; you can talk to them. I've never asked anybody to buy a car from me. People have always asked me:?What can they do to get into the car or to buy it?
"That was one thing people appreciated, that I never said, 'OK, do you want to buy the car?' I've never used those words or terms in car sales. I've always let them ask me, and I think that's what's helped me with different techniques to get people to that point."
He also admits to a bit of a flair for gambling.
"I just love the chase," McHugh tells Zap2it. "I love the gamble. For me, if I go in with something that's worth $500, and I walk out with something that's worth zero, that's the same to me as going to Vegas and losing $500. It's a big deal, but it's not the end of the world, and you have to expect it.
"If it happens, it happens."
And there are other rewards.
"A [father] will walk up with his son or daughter," McHugh says, "and again, 6 to 12 is about the range, and tell me that Wednesday nights are their bonding night. That's when they sit down and watch 'Barter Kings' together. They say that their son or daughter has now started putting things on Craigslist to trade.
"That's their time together. It's their time to learn and grow. It's the coolest thing."
