Ryan Reynolds, J.J. Abrams and Kurt Sutter working on new pilots
The new fall series haven't even premiered yet but the networks are already at work on next season's pilots.
"Fringe" executive producers J.J. Abrams and J.H. Wyman have landed a pilot production commitment at FOX for a futuristic cop show, according to Deadline. The series would revolve around LAPD officers partnered with "highly evolved human-like androids." Humanoid robots are looking like a potential trend for fall 2013. Just last week NBC made a script deal for a mystery thriller involving robot-on-human murder from Howard Gordon ("Homeland") and Josh Friedman ("Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles").
Also at FOX, Ryan Reynolds and his producing partner Allan Loeb nabbed a put pilot commitment for a single camera comedy about a compulsive gambler, Deadline reports. Put pilot means the network will pay a penalty if the pilot doesn't make it to air. Loeb, whose screenwriting credits include "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and "Rock of Ages," will write the pilot, while Reynolds is involved only as a producer.
Meanwhile, "Sons of Anarchy" honcho Kurt Sutter is branching out into comedy at FX, according to EW.com. The cable network bought Sutter's script for "Diva. Clown. Killer." which would follow the intersecting lives of a washed-up '80s rock diva, her dysfunctional son who works as a children's party clown, and an assassin. Sutter's wife and "Sons" leading lady Katey Sagal will executive produce, and may take an on screen role if scheduling allows.
