'Parenthood's' Jason Katims spies CIA dramedy with 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' writer

jason-katims-wga-awards-gi.jpgBecause "Parenthood" meets "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" would be an impossible pitch for anyone to resist, FOX has made a put pilot commitment for a CIA dramedy from "Parenthood" executive producer Jason Katims and "Smith" screenwriter Simon Kinberg.

According to Deadline, the show won't follow a married couple but instead tracks a young upstart agent who develops an unexpected father-son bond with his veteran handler. Sounds a little like "Alias" if Sydney Bristow had a sex change.

We'd watch anything with Katims' stamp on it (he also shepherded "Friday Night Lights" through its five seasons and won a richly deserved Emmy for writing the series finale), so this already sounds like one of the more promising pilots in contention for fall 2013.

But don't get too excited just yet. Kinberg attempted to turn "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" into a weekly series in 2007 starring Martin Henderson ("Off the Map") and Jordana Brewster ("Dallas"), and that never made it to air. Last season, Katims developed the hospital drama "County" starring Jason Ritter and Michael B. Jordan, that also failed to land a pickup.

Hopefully, he'll have better luck in the secret agent business.
