'Major Crimes' renewed for Season 2 on TNT

The cable channel has ordered a second season of the series, a spinoff of "The Closer." The renewal is no surprise, as "Major Crimes" has put up strong ratings since its debut in August.

The show, which stars Mary McDonnell and features most of the "Closer" cast reprising their roles, has averaged close to 7 million viewers in its inaugural run, along with 2.1 million adults 25-54 and 1.6 million adults 18-49. It's the most-watched new series on cable of 2012 so far.

With the pickup, TNT is 3-for-3 in renewals of shows that debuted this summer. "Dallas" and "Perception" also earned second seasons.

Season 2 of "Major Crimes" will run 15 episodes and is set to premiere in summer 2013. The show's current season concludes in mid-October.
