Freddie Highmore goes psycho as Norman Bates in A&E's 'Bates Motel'

freddie-highmore-london-gi.jpgEver since A&E announced their plans for "Psycho" prequel series "Bates Motel," the big question has been: Who'll play Norman Bates? The answer is finally in: Freddie Highmore, the formerly adorable child star of "Finding Neverland" and "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" now a 20-year-old young man and ready for more grown-up roles.

On paper it looks like a great pick that further solidifies our interest in the show, which already made a shrewd move in casting Oscar nominee Vera Farmiga ("Up in the Air") as Norman's infamous mother, Norma Bates. Following in Alfred Hitchcock's footsteps is a daunting challenge, but it's sounding more and more like "Bates Motel" may be up to the task. Highmore's casting was first reported by TV Guide.

"Lost's" Carlton Cuse and "Friday Night Lights'" Kerry Ehrin are overseeing the series for A&E, which begins production on a 10-episode first season this month. Expect to see the show on the air in 2013.
