'Copper's' Kyle Schmid: The one thing he's most afraid of and 9 more things to know
Canadian actor Kyle Schmid has been working steadily since he was a teenager, but 2012 is poised to be his best year yet -- and not just because we've chosen him as one of Zap2it's Ones To Watch for Fall 2012. His resume boasts everything from the powerful, stirring "A History of Violence" to a gig as America Ferrara's stepbrother in "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," and he was ahead of the vampire craze in 2006 as Henry on the Canadian series "Blood Ties." This year, he tapped the vampire vein again with a memorable arc on SyFy's "Being Human," and he can presently be seen stealing scenes on BBC America's period drama "Copper." Plus, as we exclusively reported, he also recently filmed an episode of The CW's upcoming "Arrow," in which he plays a card-carrying supervillain.
Get to know Kyle with our Q&A below, and be sure to follow him on Twitter at @iamkyleschmid. He's pretty obsessed, after all. "Copper" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on BBC America.
What's the most embarrassing song on your iPod?
I don't know if it's so much embarrassing as it is just unusual but it normally turns some heads. "I Want To Be Like You" by Louis Prima.
Zombie apocalypse or alien invasion?
Zombie apocalypse. I think we'd have a better chance of surviving as a human race. Not to mention, I've never heard of zombies probing anyone.
Do you have any current pop culture obsessions/addictions/guilty pleasures?
If you consider Twitter a pop culture obsession then yeah. I put it off for so long and made fun of so many of my friends for using it and then POW I'm hooked!
Do you have any strange phobias?
I'm petrified of spiders. I hate them. I sleep with a glass of water beside my bed every night. I woke up once to take a sip of water and almost swallowed a dead one floating in the glass.
Who is your most recent text message from?
My mom.
If you could be anywhere in the world right now, where would you be?
I'd be sitting on the beach in the south of Spain with a cold beer. I like the idea of getting away from North America for a while. I find the pace of life and priorities there refreshing.
Tell us one thing that the general public doesn't know about you.
I almost quit acting a few years ago.
Is there a celebrity you've met who made you feel starstruck?
I wasn't so much starstruck as I was speechless. A few years ago at the after-party for "A History of Violence" I was having a drink with my friends when I got a tap on the shoulder. I turned around to find Ed Harris standing there with his wife. All he said was, "Hey kid, just wanted to let you know you did a great job in the film"... I had no idea what to say, all that came out was, "Thanks...uh...you too." I didn't think he would even know who I was. The coolest part was that my friends were standing right behind me. I was just so impressed by his smooth and cool demeanor.
What do you have to have in your carry-on bag on the plane?
My iPad, iPhone, a crossword and maybe some melatonin depending on the length of the flight.
What food can you not resist?
Watermelon. Enough said, it's refreshing and sweet at the same time!
If you could guest star on one other TV show, what would it be and why?
I'd like to guest star on "Game of Thrones." I love period pieces and dark material. I think the show has a good balance of that and some solid characters.
What do your friends make fun of you for?
The Disney and Lifetime movies I did as a kid. Just when I think they've faded into the background I get a text breaking my balls about something I did over a decade ago. In a weird way it's a great reminder of the journey that's brought me here today.
