'Awkward's' Brett Davern: 'I always thought I would be doing musicals'

Zap2it: Why do you think "Awkward" -- this show about high school -- appeals to viewers of different ages?
Brett Davern: I think that is why the show has done so well, in terms of getting an audience, not just the audience they were hoping to get, the typical demographic for MTV, the teenage crowd. I hear all the time from people who had a vision of MTV being a lot of reality TV, or being just for teenagers. And they will be like, "I sat down and watched this show and now I am hooked."
Zap2it: Is this what you trained for?
Brett Davern: I always thought I would be doing musicals.
Zap2it: Have you done Broadway?
Zap2it: What was your first time on stage?
Zap2it: What's been the biggest surprise with this show?
Brett Davern: The overwhelming part is the fan response, and Twitter and Facebook has been so awesome. And we will do live tweeting while it is on. That takes me back to theater -- you get a response or you don't.
