NBC to broadcast 'The Sound of Music' live musical

In the early days of television, networks used to broadcast live musical theater -- as in, with actors actually singing, not lip-synching to a track. This year, NBC is going retro with plans to broadcast a version of "The Sound of Music" based on the beloved Broadway classic. "Smash" producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, who also did the film versions of "Chicago" and "Hairspray," will run the event, which is described as a television-stage hybrid.

"It isn't our intention to produce a remake of the movie version of 'The Sound of Music' - that would be artistic blasphemy," Zadan says in a statement. "What we want to do, instead, is to give audiences a completely fresh experience of this great Tony Award-winning stage musical in the form of a classic television event, combined with the spontaneity of a live performance. And all of the actors will be singing live; there will be no lip-synching to pre-recordings."

Meron notes that the show will feature the songs from the movie that audiences are familiar with, plus additional music from the Broadway show that theater buffs will appreciate.
