'Mad Men' Season 5 ends with highest-rated finale yet

mad-men-finale-ratings-jessica-pare.jpg"Mad Men" closed out its fifth season on Sunday (June 10) night with a well-executed finale, making it the perfect topper to what is being hailed as the show's best season ever by some critics. It seems fans agree -- according to an AMC press release both the finale and the entire season scored the show's highest ratings ever.

Still, what's high for "Mad Men" isn't necessarily compelling when compared to other shows. The finale drew 2.7 million viewers, up 13 percent from Season 4's final episode. But compare that number to "The Walking Dead's" Season 2 closer -- with 9 million viewers -- and it becomes a little less impressive. And while AMC is touting the show's average of 2.6 million viewers per episode, "TWD's" season average was 4.6 million.

"Mad Men" has always been more of a prestige show for the network, which has already committed to two more seasons of the Matt Weiner-helmed drama. But a word to the wise, AMC: If you're trying to talk Dish Network into not dropping AMC at the end of June, it might be a better idea to push shows that bring more viewers.
