'The New Normal': Ryan Murphy tries unconventional family comedy for NBC

new-normal-pilot-nbc.jpg"The New Normal" is "Glee" co-creator Ryan Murphy's first half-hour series, and it's about a gay couple (Justin Bartha and Andrew Rannells) who want to have a child.

Enter Goldie (Georgia King), who's willing to be their surrogate in hopes that she'll be able to give her own daughter, Shania (Bebe Wood), a better life. Ellen Barkin also stars as Goldie's grandmother, who apparently isn't quite as open-minded as her granddaughter.

(From the looks of things, Barkin will be the unfiltered, Sue Sylvester-like character of "The New Normal.")

Murphy co-created the series with fellow "Glee" writer-producer Ali Adler. It's set to air on Tuesday nights in the fall. Here's a clip from the pilot:
