'The Simpsons': Matt Groening reveals the real Springfield

One of the great mysteries of "The Simpsons" has finally been revealed. After more than 500 episodes, many of which feature hints and teases, show creator Matt Groening has finally announced which Springfield the show takes place in - and it's exactly what you thought.

In an interview with Smithsonian magazine, Groening says that the wildly popular animated show takes place in Springfield, OR, a city about 110 miles south of his hometown of Portland.

"Springfield was named after Springfield, Oregon. The only reason is that when I was a kid, the TV show 'Father Knows Best' took place in the town of Springfield, and I was thrilled because I imagined that it was the town next to Portland, my hometown," Groening says. "When I grew up, I realized it was just a fictitious name. I also figured out that Springfield was one of the most common names for a city in the U.S. In anticipation of the success of the show, I thought, 'This will be cool; everyone will think it's their Springfield.' And they do."

There have been obvious hints that the Oregon town of just under 60,000 was the likely inspiration. In addition to similarities in geography, topography and weather, the most notable reference is the nuclear power plant that Homer works at. It is long believed that this was modeled after the former Trojan nuclear plant in Rainier, OR, a town 50 miles north of Portland.
