'Don't Trust the B----': Is the B-word in show titles OK?

ABC's "Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23" made its debut Wednesday (April 11) night, and as the Associate Press points out, no one could imagine seeing the N-word in a title but apparently the B-word is A-OK.

Further evidence: ABC's other B-word show, "GCB," is based on Kim Gatlin's book "Good Christian B------," though, according to ABC, the B stands for "belles."

But "Don't Trust the B----" isn't about the late '90s reclamation by women of the derogatory term, because Krysten Ritter's Chloe actually is, well, a b----.

"It's very clear that she's actually a sociopath," Andi Zeisler, co-founder and editorial director of B---- Magazine, tells the AP. "It's not like here's a strong, confident woman and she's head b---- in charge. She's actually a sociopath and she treats people horribly."

And just for a little history lesson on the B-word: Insulting a woman by calling her a female dog reportedly pre-dates the B-word itself. English language historian and author of "Swearing: A Social History of Foul Language, Oaths and Profanity in English" Geoffrey Hughes suggests the connection came from the Greek goddess of hunting, Artemis, who was often portrayed with a pack of dogs -- even transforming into one herself sometimes.

So would it be equally insulting for the title to be "Don't Trust the Female Dog in Apartment 23"? It does have a nice ring to it.
