'Downton Abbey' Christmas finale fashions: 'A lot of dresses. It's great fun'

"Downton Abbey" is coming to a close this Sunday (Feb. 19) with its Season 2 Christmas special that serves as the finale to the second season. We'll have to wait a whole year to find out what is happening with our favorite residents of York!

In preparation, star Elizabeth McGovern and costume designer Susannah Buxton talk about the special costumes prepared for Christmas at Downton.

"All I can say is the styles are shifting. I'm sure people have noticed as the series has gone on," says McGovern. "But all stops are pulled out on Christmas day and in the Christmas season. The dresses are just more stunning than ever. We've come back from the war with lots of color and splash."

"What we did for Chrisitmas Day was have the family dressed a litlte bit more specius. Not ordinary day clothes," says Buxton. "But being as they are, this wealthy family, they change again for the evening. So I think we cover five evening scenes in the Christmas special. That's a lot of dresses. It's great fun."

"Downton Abbey" airs Sunday nights at 9 p.m. ET/PT on PBS. For more information on the fashions, check out our "Downton Abbey" fashion photo gallery.
