Charles Dickens' 'Great Expectations,' 'Mystery of Edwin Drood' coming to Masterpiece on PBS

dickens-great-expectations-PBS.jpgFeb. 7, 2012 marks Charles Dickens' 200th birthday. PBS is celebrating his bicentennial with two new adaptations, bringing the total to 16 Dickens titles to Masterpiece.

The first new adaptation is "Great Expectations," starring Gillian Anderson as Miss Havisham, a woman who was jilted at the altar in her youth. Newcomer Douglas Booth stars as Pip, the young man who is snared in Miss Havisham's lair. Watch a preview below and look for "Great Expectations" to air in two parts Sunday, April 1 and Sunday, April 8 at 9 p.m. on PBS.

Secondly, a lesser-known Dickens novel (and one of our personal favorites), "The Mystery of Edwin Drood," is coming to PBS later in April. "Edwin Drood" is Dickens' infamous unfinished mystery, which he was writing when he died. Since it is unfinished, screenwriter Gwyneth Hughes ("Miss Austen Regrets," "Five Days") imagines how the story might have ended. "Brothers & Sisters" star Matthew Rhys stars. "Edwin Drood" premieres Sunday, April 15 at 9 p.m. on PBS.
