'American Idol': Ethan James is great despite song choice
"American Idol" found a fun country-rock singer in Ethan James, who is a member of St. Louis-area band the Well Hungarians. He sang Edwin McCain's "I'll Be" and he did a wonderful job, despite picking one of the most overdone songs on "Idol" (see also: "At Last" and the one about being a prison guard's son).
As HitFix Dan tweets, "Pitch: In a post-apocalyptic future, reality contestants who sing "I'll Be" are hunted and killed for sport."
Anyway. The judges were highly complimentary of James, despite his having blood running down his face from a cut he scratched open because he was so nervous. It was kind of a hot mess of an audition, so thank goodness he can really sing.
