ABC Family picks up dance drama 'Bunheads'

sutton-foster-gi.jpgABC Family is adding one more scripted series to its programming slate -- the network has picked up "Bunheads," a dance drama from "Gilmore Girls" creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

The series follows Sutton Foster's Michelle, a Las Vegas showgirl who moves to a small town with her new husband and becomes the newest teacher at her mother-in-law's dance school. The Broadway vet is joined by "Friday Night Lights" actress Stacey Oristano.

"I spent 20 years of my life with my hair in a bun. I was supposed to be a dancer," Sherman-Palladino says. "My mother was a dancer. Her greatest heartbreak was when I got on 'Roseanne.' So, while writing this will never equal playing Rumpelteazer in a bus and truck tour of 'Cats,' it does let me to tip my hat to a really special time in my life."

"Bunheads" joins "Baby Daddy," the comedy ABC Family picked up last week that stars Cameron Deane Stewart as a single dad and Chelsea Kane as the best friend who's secretly in love with him.
