Scotty McCreery debuts at No. 1 on Billboard chart, breaks 'American Idol' drought
"American Idol" champ Scotty McCreery made a little bit of history with his debut album, "Clear As Day."The album will enter the Billboard 200 charts at No. 1 this week. It's the first time an "Idol" winner has debuted in the top spot with their first post-show album since Season 2 winner Ruben Studdard released his album "Soulful" in December 2003.
"Clear As Day" sold 197,000 copies in its first week, which according to Billboard is the best mark for an "Idol" winner's first album since David Cook's eponymous release sold 280,000 copies in 2008 (Cook was third on the album chart then).
He's also the first country artist to debut at No. 1 with his first solo record and the youngest male artist, at 18, to have his first release come out of the gates at No. 1.
The sales for "Clear As Day" also top the combined debut totals for the previous two "American Idol" winners: Kris Allen's self-titled debut tallied 80,000 copies in its first week, and Lee DeWyze's "Live It Up" sold 38,000 copies in week one.
