'Chuck': Joshua Gomez on Morgan, the Intersect and saying a bittersweet goodbye

Chuck-Final-Season-Joshua-Gomez-Zachary-Levi-Yvonne-Strahovski-Adam-Baldwin.jpg"Chuck" launches its fifth and likely last season on Friday, Oct. 28, on NBC -- right across from the final game of the World Series, airing on FOX.

On Thursday night, series creator Josh Schwartz tweeted, "The plan is still to premiere Chuck Season 5 tomorrow night. yes, versus Game 7. No, we wouldn't have it any other way."

As Schwartz intimated, this is nothing new for hard-luck "Chuck," a lighthearted espionage comedy-drama that has endured more than one nail-biter on its rocky path to a 13-episode fifth season.

Things are different for the last go-round. Super-spy Chuck Bartowski (Zachary Levi) is finally wed to his dream girl and spy partner, Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski). With a new fortune in their possession, they and fellow spy John Casey (Adam Baldwin), have won their independence from the CIA and gone freelance.

But, Chuck has lost possession of the high-tech Intersect computer -- and all the information and instant spy skills it contains -- to the brain of his best pal, big-box electronics store manager Morgan Grimes (Joshua Gomez).

"It's been a really cool turn for my character," says Gomez, "and a lot of fun to play. It's been a lot more work and a lot more physically demanding, but it's been fun."

Since Levi has played the character that is host to the Intersect for four seasons, one might think that Gomez has acquired a new appreciation of him.

So, I've always been in awe of the schedule that they have to do, to put in the hours and the wearing of different hats kind of thing, especially Zach, doing all the hats -- the drama, the comedy, the action.

"I've gotten my full taste of it now, and it's cool. It's a lot to take on, and it prepares you for a lot of things. So, going forward now, after this season of 'Chuck,' I feel I can do anything. Mostly, it's that other TV shows would feel pretty easy after this."

Such as, perhaps, a half-hour multi-camera comedy?

"That's what I'm saying," says Gomez. "That's what I mean -- a nice table read, a cup of coffee."

Morgan is known for his love of video games, but asked whether Morgan now gets a real gun, Gomez says, "Um, yes. I will say yes to that question."

Further asked if it is a real gun, Gomez says, "Uh, I'll say yes to that question. None of that tranq-dart crap for me, baby."

But as to his gun-handling skills, Gomez says, "Just terrible -- but with the Intersect, they're amazing. Yeah, man, paging Chuck Norris!"

There is also a lot more fighting.

"I tried my best," says Gomez. "Our stunt team and fight team, they're amazing. They crash-coursed me and got me up and running, just the basics and some specifics in different fight styles. But mostly, honestly, it's the great stunt team and a great stunt double.

"It was definitely a challenge and kind of nerve-wracking. Upper-body wise, I'm good if I'm throwing a punch, but my lower body is just awful, just spindly little chicken legs trying to throw a real kick. So when you see me do a kick, it's probably CG."

Speaking in mid-October, Gomez says the show has just finished episode 508, which means it's beyond the halfway point of what looks to be its last season.

"We've re-bonded," says Gomez, "and having fun and enjoying every minute of it. Now that it's finally coming to an end, that has been, actually, a lot of fun, even though there's the bittersweet factor.

"You can definitely feel it. It's always there. 'Wow, six more left. We're doing a countdown.' It's really crazy."

Gomez has also come to appreciate the intense attachment "Chuck" fans have to their show.

"The people that do know it," he says, "who do love it, are just fanatical about it. It's an amazing feeling. And to know that you've brought that much joy and happiness into people's lives on a weekly basis is amazing.

"Some people feel like, 'Whoa, wait a minute, is this really the end?' That's what we've been told, and that's what I'm sticking to."
