'X Factor's' Simon Cowell: Paula 'was like getting an old dog back from the rescue pound'

simon-cowell-x-factor-520.jpgSimon Cowell is preparing for the series premiere of new reality competition show "The X Factor." He tells reporters Tuesday (Sept. 13) about what we can expect and what it's like working with judges.

On the launch of "The X Factor" Wednesday night with a premiere in Hollywood:

"I'm feeling excited now. It is always nerves before a launch, but it's good nerves ... my friends and the people who've seen the show, they've gotten excited about it and I'm hoping obviously America feels the same way too. I'm looking forward to tomorrow 'cause I've always wanted to do this, which is have a, not a film premiere but a TV premiere."

On the judges:

"Paula can be a bit wacky at times, but Nicole wasn't far behind in a fantastically self-centered way, which she wasn't aware of. She kept changing her accent. In New York, she had this sort-of Brooklyn accent and then we went to Dallas and she was this Southern belle. It was like getting an old dog back from the rescue pound. Grateful to see you and the relationship's back intact.

On the contestants we can look forward to:

"Different types of contestants than you've seen before. Very different back stories. The kind of stories other shows wouldn't put on and we are ... It's very raw, it's very edgy, it's real life. But they are different to what you've seen before."

On what they encourage in contestants:

"100% we want as many unique versions as possible otherwise it just turns into a karaoke competition. Within about three weeks into the show you're going to start hearing contestants way outside their comfort zone, hearing versions of songs you've never heard before."

Which songs he never wants to hear again:

"'I Believe I Can Fly' is pretty high up there. 'At Last' I think I'm now allergic to that song ... 'Ordinary People' by John Legend. They always try to do that version and it's never as good."

On a possible "Idol" original lineup reunion with Randy:

"I miss Randy 'cause he really is a good friend. Maybe we'll get him just a couple of ront row seats every week and he can just do his dog barking thing every. [laughs] No, but seriously, I do miss him. But he's happy on 'Idol.' ... I'm going to miss Randy as a person, but we hang out all the time."

On "Idol" up for Best Reality Competition program at the Emmys on Sunday (Sept. 18):

"I'd find it very amusing that after all these years the years I wasn't on it, it would win the Emmy. It would make me laugh, so it probably will. No, I don't see it as threatening, it would be more ironic. But if it does win this year, ti's for all the years we did before, so whatever happens I'm going to claim the victory."

"The X Factor" premieres on FOX Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 8 p.m. ET.
