'Modern Family' elects David Cross to recurring part

david-cross-modern-family-gi.jpgAs if Claire Dunphy didn't have enough to deal with on "Modern Family," she'll be getting an outside nemesis this season.

The ABC comedy has cast David Cross ("Arrested Development") in a recurring role, a network rep confirms to Zap2it. (The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Cross joining the show.) He'll play a city councilman who will butt heads with Claire (Julie Bowen). Do we smell "Slow Down Your Neighbors 2"?

Cross will also star in the second season of his IFC comedy "The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret" this season. It's scheduled to return in January.

The newly engaged Cross co-starred on FOX's "Running Wilde" last season. Other recent credits include voice work on "Megamind" and "Kung Fu Panda 2" and "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel." And if an "Arrested Development" movie ever gets made, he'll be part of it.

"Modern Family" premieres at 9 p.m. ET Wednesday, Sept. 21.
