'Weeds' may continue past Season 7; 'Shameless' returns in January
Before the current season of "Weeds" began, there were reports that it would be its last (conflicting reports, to be sure, but it was out there nonetheless). Now, though, it sounds like the scale is tipping toward the series continuing into an eighth season on Showtime.
"I'm optimistic," Showtime Entertainment president David Nevins said Thursday (Aug. 4) at the Television Critics Association press tour. "It's been an interesting year, and I'm excited for people to see where it goes by the end of the season as all the stories coalesce."
Nevins also praises creator Jenji Kohan for "evolving her show and making it move in different places," which he thinks could help extend the life of the show.
"I haven't picked it up yet, but I'm optimistic," he says.
Other notes from Showtime's press tour session:
- Three series -- two veterans and one new show -- will roll premiere Sunday, Jan. 8. "Shameless" will begin its second season at 9 p.m. ET, and it will be followed by the new dark comedy "House of Lies," starring Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell, Ben Schwartz and Josh Lawson at 10. Season 5 of "Californication" debuts at 10:30 that night.
- The cable channel has also picked up a half-hour series called "Laughing Stock," executive produced by "The Office" star Steve Carell and David Steinberg. The show will feature Steinberg interviewing top comedians, including Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner, Tina Fey, Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld, Judd Apatow, Jane Lynch and Carell himself. It will premiere early next year.

Showtime does has a lot of stinkers lately! I don't think they should give up on weeds just yet. Quite frankly, I only watch Weeds & Nurse Jackie so if they get rid of one I will most likely cancel my account and then wait for DVD for nurse Jackie. It's getting really good and going back to it's roots finally. Keep it showtime!!
Jeez, Weeds used to be funny and entertaining, but it has long passed its expiration date. I still watch it (might as well stick it out to the end), but can't remember the last time I laughed during a scene. And the storylines get more and more absurd, and I never liked the show for its elaborate plots. Please, just end it already.
I was so happy with the reports that this was going to be the last year. I had held on with this show ever since they left Agrestic solely out of interest in the stories of Silas and Shane. This is NOT welcome news about Weeds. Showtime needs a serious rejuvenation of its series. It seems to be where HBO was following the end of Sopranos.
I half figured that with Weeds, too close to 100 episodes not to get there. It should have ended years ago, but this and last season have been a big improvement over everything since the 2nd one. The latest episode was the best they've done in years.
I love Weeds, but it should have ended last season. Last season's ending would have been a perfect ending to the series.
The 7th season is the worst so far! I can't remember the last time I laughed while watching. Each episode looks like a bunch of random scenes just glued together. And those "profound" monologues about motherhood...really?! Nancy's overdoing it - waaay too much effort in even the simplest scenes. What is up with MLP? She used to be so good in this show! The only good thing is - let's face it - chances of seeing Silas with his shirt off!
I am a HUGE fan of Weeds! Love Nancy and the family, and am so excited to see whats next!
I have been waiting for Weeds for what seems to be forever. Great season.
Weeds needs Celia Hoades to bring back some humor.
If it does end please let poor Andy end up with Nancy.
