'Supernatural's' Misha Collins: Don't expect Castiel to help Sam out
"Supernatural" fans were sent into a bit of a tailspin at the end of Season 6, when the fan favorite character of Castiel took a dramatic turn toward the dark side and actor Misha Collins' role was reduced from series regular to guest star status. At Comic-Con, executive producer Sera Gamble was coy about Castiel's involvement after the first two episodes, and Collins is not currently contracted for any further appearances.
We spoke with Collins at the Television Critics Association party on Wednesday night, and he helped to shed some light on Castiel's current point of view. "I'll spoil this right now for you -- he does start the season as both a wrathful and vengeful god," Collins says. "But he's also righteous, in his own mind. He thinks that he's doing the right thing."
In the Season 6 finale, Castiel brought down the "wall" in Sam's (Jared Padalecki) mind that protected him from his memories of hell, destroying Sam's mental health in a way that's unfathomable to any other human. When he did it, though, Castiel promised that he'd ultimately save Sam from the trauma.
Don't hold your breath for Castiel to make good on that promise, though. "No, he wants Sam to suffer for a while," Collins says. "Sam's basically f***ed."
Castiel's treatment of Sam isn't going to fly with Dean, and though Collins tells us that there's always hope that the relationship can be repaired, we shouldn't expect an easy fix. The former friends won't come to a resolution in Collins' first two episodes, and should he return later, there's no telling whether amends will be made. "There's as big a rift as you can possibly imagine between the two characters," he says. "Honestly, I don't know where it's going to go."
At San Diego Comic-Con, executive producer Sera Gamble told us that when we see Castiel in Season 7, he's dealing with a great deal of power and a great deal of rage. "Cas went looking for his father and his father never showed up for him. He's furious about that," she says. "He feels like everything that has come after for him has come after because he had to do everything. He's kind of like that latchkey kid who had to take care of the kids and take care of the kids and take care of the kids, because Dad never came home, so there is this sort of resentment. But if you're not God, you're not God. There's a reason God is God, we discover, over the course of this storyline."
For Collins' part, he hopes that ultimately we'll see the character redeemed. "I've grown affectionate for him and developed an affinity for him over the years, and of course, I probably identify with him more than anyone. I definitely want him to be redeemed. I love him; of course I want to see that."

Weigh in, Castiel fans! Where do you hope to see the character taken in Season 7?
Back in Heaven and gone for good. Thank you
Sounds like Cas is still mad he didn't get that hug!
Cas, u mad that Sam didn't hug you?
So basically Nat has terrible taste?
I don't want him to be redeemed, you don't take Sam's wall down and Dean just say 'hey dude it's all good' he committed a huge epic fail. Do not go after the Winchesters, bridges are burned forever now as far as i'm concerned. And I say this as a cas fan, i look forward to seeing Misha do evil but i think it's massively ooc to see Sam and Dean just let him off.
Dean especially, he's done the one thing Dean never forgives, messed with Sam.
Lets look at past evidence. Samuel acts shifty and manipulates soulless sam, dean says next time he sees him he'll kill him. Gordon messes with Sam, Dean vows a swift death upon him, Ruby messes with Sam, Dean is epically rageful.
If they have him get over what Castiel did easily or even ever, i'd probably wonder how they got Dean so OOC.
And poor Sam. He's just collateral damage for Castiel now. And it's not on. He's messed him up and I won't be in a huge rush to have him forgiven or redeemed at all.
I think the angel/demon story is played out now. Ok so this is a new angle having Cas renegade God. I'm really not sure how I feel about them bringing God into it in such a ridiculous way and i'm not overly religious but the idea alone is kind of egotistical.
I just basically think Castiel should finish at this season. Sera is right to get the back to its roots nature of the show back. We miss the monster of the week and the lighter hearted days with the brothers still being able to find SOMETHING to get out of bed for. Now they are constantly tortured and ruined and we miss that bright side too. Before there was a reason they did this harsh job, they had hope, now they have virtually nothing anymore. It's just sad.
I'd like the writers to have Sam and Dean messed up like always but with a big of hope and at least a bit of fun occasionally. And i think Cas should finish up his arc this season he's had a good run.
I love Cas, and I very much hope to see redemption for him, but most of all i just hope he isn't killed off or anything and that we get to see more of him on the show.
I can't stand Castiel. ENOUGH ALREADY.
'Sam is f*cked' - Never has the context of this made me sadder, I thought we'd be getting naked Sam for a second. Way to dash my dream Misha.
Wow I have to say Sera is desperate to take everything away from Dean (isolate him further) so that Dean could be nurturing his brother 24/7 but of course even thou Sam will be oh so damaged he'll still be the big badass hero.
Let's make the claustrofobic and unhealthy relationship between the boys even more claustrofobic, unhealthy and repetative - ups should I say redundant.
Also in the process let's destroy unique character many people like.
