'Sex and the City' prequel 'The Carrie Diaries' eyed by The CW: But why?
After the success of "Sex and the City" on HBO, it's no surprise that HBO is looking to extend the franchise. Deadline now reports that HBO, which owns the rights to "The Carrie Diaries," the high-school prequel to "Sex and the City," is looking to The CW to be the home of the prequel, which chronicles Carrie's life in high school.Author Candice Bushnell would executive produce, and the hope is that "Gossip Girl" and "The O.C." bosses Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage would also oversee.
"The Carrie Diaries" begins in Carrie Bradshaw's senior year of high school in the 1980s and ultimately leads into her first NYC internship. Her love interest in the books is Sebastian Kidd, an untrustworthy classmate who ultimately comes between her and her best friend, Lali. In New York, Carrie does meet Samantha Jones, but she's the only other "Sex and the City" character expected to appear.
Here's the thing -- "Sex and the City" certainly appeals to a CW audience, but knowing how the story ends (basically, with Mr. Big and a whole new set of BFFs) does take away from the thrill of watching a series. After all -- why will new viewers invest in Carrie and Sebastian's relationship if there's no chance of a happily ever after?
We know The CW audience pretty well (we are The CW audience) and we've seen too many "Gossip Girl" and "Vampire Diaries" fans battle over the "endgame" to believe that viewers will invest in a series where the heroine's future has already been decided. We wouldn't mind a "Carrie Diaries" movie, but an entire series? We'll pass.
Not to mention, The CW already has a show about young, driven women in New York City, and that's "Gossip Girl," which has had dwindling ratings over the last few years. It's time for a new formula.

How would this series be diff from the Smallville concept? Fans knew where that story was headed from the beginning too but the show went on for, like, ever. For the record I think the reason it wouldn't work is more about the '80s fashion/music, and the tech limitations-- I can't imagine a contemp aud standing for a plot slowed down by no cell phones and internet.
I think I might just have a panic attack. Worst. Idea. Ever.
@sspignese, you really don't see how a superhero origin story is different from a story about a high school girl who winds up a single woman writing a newspaper column?
Teen dramas are about romance. Sure, there are hijinks along the way but in the end it comes down to romance. Even Smallville was about the pairings for so many viewers -- Lois/Clark fans got to see the epic love build to its final great romantic moment. The epic love in The Carrie Diaries builds to a breakup.
Let's not forget Cw's attempt to give Lily van der Woodsen her own show. Same problem, the endgame was already decided.
I read the carrie diaries and summer in the city and they weren't the best books ever. that's the reason I don't think a tv show or movie would work.
Didn't they try airing Sex and the City on Fox or something but they had to cut so much out of it people wondered what the point was? Gossip Girl is showing its age so I can see them wanting to get a replacement series that's basically going to be the same thing, and all they need is to get the PTC mad and they'll gain a couple million viewers easy, but the thing about the Bradshaw "saga" is it's all about the sex, and I just can't see that working in the relatively repressed atmosphere of US network prime time. They'd be better off doing this for cable or as a one-off movie. And odds are they'll have to spring for Sarah Jessica Parker to film framing scenes for the flashbacks if they want to get the core audience of the TV show and movies to bother tuning in.
Oh, sweet mother, no.
Plus, no nudity. And if the producers of Gossip Girl handle it, then in the future, it will suck *** (Gossip Girl season 3 and on).
Thats all we need... Another Sluts in the City to warp our young kids minds !!! I can understand putting it on late on HBO but this crap on early enough for the kiddies to watch on free tv !!!
i think most sex and the city fans would die for this show to be made.. we'd do anything to get our hands on more carrie bradshaw and her antics!! i personally saw the last episodes of sex and the city first then went back to watch the beginning, even though i knew what was going to happen.
