Gloria Steinem urges boycott of 'The Playboy Club'

Gloria_Steinem_Getty.jpgWhile politics makes strange bedfellows, apparently television makes even stranger bedfellows: Gloria Steinem is joining the Parents Television Council in urging viewers to boycott the upcoming NBC series "The Playboy Club."

She tells Reuters, "Clearly 'The Playboy Club' is not going to be accurate. It was the tackiest place on earth. It was not glamorous at all."

Steinem, a leading women's rights advocate, has first-hand knowledge of the inner workings of the club. In 1963 she worked undercover as a Bunny at the New York City Playboy Club while writing for Show magazine. In the article she wrote of the low wages and difficult working conditions these women faced.

"When I was working there and writing the exposé one of the things they had to change because of my exposé was that they required all the Bunnies, who were just waitresses, to have an internal exam and a test for venereal disease," she adds.

NBC offered no comment on Steinhem's statements.

The show focuses on the lives of the famed Bunnies as well as clientele at the original Playboy Club in 1960s Chicago.

NBC Entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt recently described the show as "really fun soap opera" and "tame compared to what you'd see on 'Jersey Shore.'" Executive producer Chad Hodge said the program is "all about empowering these women to be whatever they want to be."

Steinem's comments mark the latest in a series of controversies for "The Playboy Club." In July, the PTC issued a letter to NBC affiliates asking them to not air the program. In June, the Salt Lake City NBC affiliate KSL announced in would not air the period drama. Within days, Salt Lake City's MyNetworkTV station agreed to pick up the series.

"The Playboy Club" debuts Monday, Sept. 19 at 10 p.m. ET.

Hollywood as always, fresh, innovative, and original (not) clearly has opted to mindlessly ape Mad Men's take on 60's culture with what are sure to be totally predictable results. Count me out!

Oh...I almost forgot 'Pan Am' add that to the pile of crap too.

I'm always amazed when people make judgement like this without watching an episode. Maybe, it will be crap, but I'll watch first before making irrational statements.

Um... aren't most era TV shows known for glamorizing the times? I don't believe That 70's show was completely accurate. And Swingtown wasn't perfect either. Just watch the first episode and them make your judgments. It looks interesting and no one is claiming that it is a documentary and 100% factual.

I'm not going to Judge a show unwatchable unless I actually watch an episode.
I really don't like people telling me what I should and should not watch !

This woman is an old bag!

I will watch to see the ratings to see if people are going to boycott the show lol. Honestly these kinds of things dont make that much of a difference to people watching or not watching a show.

It's going up against "5-0" and "Castle", it won't last long for those reasons.

You don't need to be a detective to know what this garbage excuse of a show is all about. Gloria S. is 100% correct. Playboy is (deservedly) a relic of the past, and nothing to be celebrated. Let it go already.

So what if that era is glamorized? It's not like anyone can bring it back. It's all in the past so I don't see anything wrong with being nostalgic about it. At least it's different. A lot of TV shows these days have the same story, the same shocking plotlines that it's getting boring. I'll watch this show to see if it's interesting enough to come back to weekly.
