Gay characters on TV: ABC Family, The CW lead the way
ABC Family was the most gay-inclusive network on TV in the 2010-11 season, according to an annual survey by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation. The cable channel, whose breakout show "Pretty Little Liars" has a lesbian character -- Shay Mitchell's Emily -- among its four leads, received an "excellent" rating in GLAAD's fifth annual Network Responsibility Index, released Wednesday morning (Aug. 3). The survey tracks the "quantity, quality and diversity of images" of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender characters in primetime.
ABC Family is the second network to receive an excellent rating, following MTV last year. Of the 103 hours of original programming GLAAD surveyed on ABC Family, it found 55 percent of those hours included "LGBT-inclusive" images.
"Programs like 'Pretty Little Liars' and 'Greek' have woven gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters into their stories in a way that mirrors the diversity of our community and the experiences of younger generations," GLAAD senior director of programs Herndon Graddick says. "Viewers expect to see television environments that accurately reflect what it's like to be a young adult, and today that includes young adults who happen to be gay."
"We're proud of our programming and grateful for the recognition from GLAAD," ABC Family president Michael Riley says. "We strive to reflect the rich diversity of our audience and the world around us, including the LGBT community, through strong characters and engaging, authentic storytelling."
Several other cable networks -- Showtime, TNT, HBO, Lifetime, AMC and Syfy -- all received "good" ratings, GLAAD's second highest designation. USA improved from "failing" to "adequate" in 2010-11.
Among the broadcast networks, The CW, FOX and ABC all scored "good" ratings, with The CW having the highest percentage of LGBT-inclusive programming (33 percent). CBS and NBC both earned "adequate" ratings.

That is really great! But honestly I would love to see more minorities on the CW and ABC Family. Their shows are usually whiter than white. Just saying....
So there has to be gay characters on every network now for GLAAD people to be okay? That's so silly.
i think this is a positive reflextion on all of our lives. Lets face it we all know someone who is gay and they are just like the rest of us, so why not see that on TV as well.
I still find it interesting that there are more gays on TV than hispanics, even tho we are the fastest growing mayority in the US...
I did mean to say minority.
The only problem I have is when they put a gay character into a show just because they have to. I find that more insulting than not. It's the same as casting someone of a certain race (or in some cases, gender) simply based on that factor and not whether it serves the character, story, or if the actor in question is any good. Ability of actor and quality of character should be the deciding factor, not skin color or orientation.
I guess there's a reason they call it ABC "Family." What what?
Yeah the reason they call it ABC family is because they bought the channel from Pat Robertson. Which I find really funny after all since he rails against this whole issue on the 700 club after each of these shows airs!
It was a requirement for it to have "family" in the name by Robertson and to be able to show the 700 club was also a requirement. Ironic don't you think?
This is a joke! Why didn't they grade Logo????? ;-)
It just shows that people nowadays are open minded. Gays are good actors and actress. I love watching them at tvhook online tv.
