From 'Top Chef' to 'The Chew,' Carla Hall talks soap fan feedback
Soap fans, we're just as sad about ABC canceling "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" as you are, but don't take it out on Carla Hall.
The 47-year-old model-turned-chef is one of the most charming and hilarious contestants in "Top Chef" history.
Starting Sept. 26, she'll parlay her two-season stint on the show into a full-time hosting gig on ABC's "The Chew." And as Hall told Zap2it and other press at the Television Critics Association summer press tour, the food-centric talk show's recently-vacated afternoon time slot carries a lot of baggage.
"I get the tweets from these wonderful and passionate people, and I understand," says Hall. "They've been watching soaps for half their live and they're very passionate. I hope that what we have for them is that takeaway that everybody does eat. Everybody is on a budget. Everyone is trying to do something different every day. Hopefully this works in their lives as something they can use."
We're guessing a lot of those passionate people have been "All My Children" fans, since "The Chew" will be taking the soap's 1:00 p.m. ET spot. But any negative feedback has not dissuaded Hall from being excited about the show, something she sums up quite well.
"When I talk about 'The Chew,' I tell people it's a combination of 'The View' meets 'Friends' meets 'Iron Chef," says Hall. "It's a lot of meeting."
A live talk show, "The Chew" will incorporate celebrity interviews, discussions of healthy living and roughly two cooking segments in every episode. And those familiar with Hall know that her recipes will focus on comfort food, something she reaffirmed her passion for on "Top Chef."
"I learned a lot about myself," she says. "When you are around that many chefs, you learn what your perspective is and sort of who you are when it comes to food."

What is the audience for soaps compared to a food show hybred ? I hope this doesn't forbode the elimination of soaps yet they stil seem to be popular to Latin audiences as evidenced by their ratings at night. My Network TV failed with their nightime soaps but the daytime audience is different so it may have been premature for the ABC daytime cancellations.
I think she will be saying different when the show becomes a complete flop.
I will never watch The Chew. Ever.
I will watch for Carla...but I don't have high hopes for "The Chew"
Soap fans don't want to watch cooking shows, they want to watch soaps. I'll be turning my channel to watch The Young and Restless instead of The Spew.
Sounds like a complete vapid waste of time, not to mention absolutely un-original. Gee, where else can you get celebrity interviews, lifestyle choices and cooking?
They may as well put a test pattern on instead of this crap. Online I will go to follow the soaps, and off will go ABC during the day.
Oh, please... The View meets Friends meets Iron Chef? I've seen the promos and I don't think so. The daytime viewers who loved their soaps will not be watching.
I will not watch The Chew. EVER. Even if it was the last show left on tv. I understand it is not the hosts fault. It is the ABC/Disney exec's. To replace such good shows like AMC, OLTL and GH is just wrong. These shows are staples in peoples homes. No show can ever replace these iconic shows. I have watched these shows since I was a baby with my Grandma. Once these shows are off ABC my tv will never be on that channel again. I will block any Disney station so they can not be seen in my house.
Me thinks people need to get a life! Really? ". . . my tv will never be on that channel again." I'm not a fan of non-scripted tv but getting rid of tired, old soaps can't be a bad thing.
I know it's not her fault that AMC was cancelled, but she can still go eat s*#t! I'm sure one of the hosts must have a recipe for such a dish.
