'Eureka' canceled, won't get a sixth season on Syfy

eureka-animated-holiday.jpgThat news about "Eureka" getting a six-episode final season before bowing out? Never mind.

Syfy said late Monday (Aug. 8) that the final season wouldn't happen -- and consequently, the 13-episode fifth season that's currently in production and due to air next year will be its last. EW was first to report the news.

In a statement, Syfy calls the cancellation a "difficult business decision." It's a pretty surprising reversal of the channel's position of just a few days ago, when it confirmed a six-episode final run would come after Season 5.

Here's the full statement from Syfy:

"After painstaking consideration, we have had to make the difficult business decision to not order a season six of 'Eureka.' But 'Eureka' is not over yet. There is a new holiday episode this December and 12 stellar episodes set to debut next year, marking its fifth season and six memorable years on Syfy. The 2012 episodes are some of the best we've seen, and will bring this great series to a satisfying end. We are very grateful to [executive producers] Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia, their team of incredible writers, and an amazing cast and crew who have consistently delivered a series we continue to be very proud of. We thank the fans for their support of this show and know they will enjoy its final season in 2012."

On the upside, the show's team still has time to craft an ending for the series. On the downside, they have to craft an ending for the series sooner than anticipated. What do you think of the decision?

Production on season 5 is over in 2 weeks, That is not enough time to write a script and film it. Plus they have to wrap up whatever story they have going in season 5

SyFy should get the last 6 episodes. It's not over yet so I can't say I miss it, but I probably will. I was watching it earlier and kept thinking how much I enjoyed the characters

They saw Warehouse 13...saw the possible spin off and ran with it. Eureka is expensive to produce so they cancel it. Mark my words a warehouse 13 spin off will be its replacement.

First no Stargate...now screwing over Eureka...sy fy sucks anymore!

I get cancellations, but not allowing long-running shows to do a proper farewell... I feel like they once cared more about the fans than this.

This is sad news. Syfy-not-sci-fi is probably canceling Eureka in order to make room in their schedule for Ghost Hunters Universal. I'm sure that will be a popular addition to the existing Ghost Hunters, Ghost Hunters Academy, and Ghost Hunters International. Or maybe we'll get more wrestling. That'd be so awesome.

Actually, no, it wouldn't.

This sucks royally. Syfy (worst network name/rename ever btw) has the most frustrating programming decisions ever. It was bad enough that Syfy has screwed over Eureka for years by splitting up the seasons every year, in a confusing nonschedule that fans can hardly follow. And how they tried (unsuccessfully?) to franchise Stargate but instead overexposed the public with a succession of (some subpar) shows, was plain stupid. Syfy has a few shows that show promise. But if the head of that network or at least the programming head isn't replaced soon, I'm sure this network won't ever amount to anything but a second class cable network. Stupid. At least give Eureka fans some warning, another season to get some closure perhaps? Don't leave fans hanging like Syfy did with the end of each of the Stargate's shows. Award us for the loyalty we've shown for these shows! Man, I'm not even going to get attached or remain loyal to the rest of the Syfy shows. They're going to get yanked with no warning just like these past shows were.

I have to agree with josef. Please explain how wrestling has ANYTHING to do with sci-fi. I expect to see Ghost Hunters-The Storage Pods, Ghost Hunter Towing & Repo, and Ghost Hunters The Early Years.

Here we go again. Once again the tail is wagging the dog at syfy. They have a show with a well established and documented solid fan base, who have supported the show through time slot, and day moves, only to turn around and slap said fans in the face for supporting a quality show. By all means Syfy, let's fill the timeslot with, oh what the hell, INFOMERCIALS. That way you know you'll get a good return on investment for your timeslots while at the same time extending the finger and hitting your viewers with the old intercourse you. So much for power mondays. Alphas is a heroes knock off, and Warehouse 13 is the X-Files redone with younger leads. You know what really makes me laugh, whenever I see the 'Syfy ORIGINAL' programming label. Syfy deserves to blip into oblivion for the way they treat fans of Sci-Fi, and something tells me it won't be long until that fantasy becomes reality.

Sorry to say but I loved Eureka. However, I think it has run its course and this will give it a chance to end its season when it is supposed to instead of some half a** 6 episode run.
