Sunday nights will never be the same again.

After rumors of internal debate over the series' future and just a few days shy of an expected announcement at the Television Critics Association press tour, Deadline reports that Season 8 will indeed be the last for ABC's successful primetime soap "Desperate Housewives."

The network will reportedly confirm its plan for the series during its Aug. 7 press day, with cast members apparently notified Friday (Aug. 5) of the news.

It had previously been thought that "Desperate Housewives" might carry on through 2013, after creator Marc Cherry expressed his desire to do 9 seasons and the four original leading ladies (Teri Hatcher, Felicity Huffman, Marcia Cross and Eva Longoria Parker) all renewed their contracts with options for the additional year.

"Desperate Housewives" premiered in 2004 to an audience of 21.6 million, growing to 30 million during the season. And for much of its run (2006-2010), it was the most-watched comedy series in the world.

When the show returns Sept. 25, it will be the first time in its history without Cherry at the helm. He left his role as showrunner last season to focus on his development deal with ABC Studios.
