The 'Torchwood' team remembers Ianto at Comic-Con: 'It wasn't our fault!'
A lot of "Torchwood" fans -- we're looking at you, Zap2it readers -- are still lamenting the demise of Ianto Jones (Gareth David-Lloyd).His death in "Children of Earth" marked a premature end for his romance with Captain Jack (John Barrowman) and a major fan gripe going into "Miracle Day." So when the cast convened for its Comic-Con panel on Friday (July 22) morning, they explained that fans are supposed to be upset.
"It was exactly the reaction we hoped for and wanted," Barrowman assures the crowd. "It means you're committed."
That said ... they didn't do it. "It wasn't our decision," says Barrowman, who gestured to equally innocent co-star Eve Myles. "It wasn't our fault. But in order to move the drama on, we had to do something drastic ... The one thing we are is a drama. In drama you have to do some things that will, unfortunately, upset and cause change."
Jack, for one, seems to be over it. Episode 3 of "Miracle Day" includes a rendezvous with a new interest -- and the exclusive Comic-Con trailer for the rest of the season showed off the flashback romance Barrowman recently told us about.
And while you'll probably never see Ianto again, you can still count on the occasional shout-out. "We, as a show, love that you are all passionate about the characters," Barrowman explains to fans. "He is still remembered and mentioned."

"It was exactly the reaction we hoped for and wanted," Barrowman assures the crowd. "It means you're committed."
They hoped me being upset? For sure I am committed now but it's a committment not to watch, that's all...
Barrowman admitted the decision to kill off Ianto was because they 'had' to move to America:
"Russell T. Davies explains it better, he says we couldn't have transplanted the show in the States and brought the entire company with it. People had to die!"
But I see they keep insisting in feeding people crap about the unnecessary elimination of Ianto.
The Torchwood people should stop insulting their viewers, before no one is left to listen to their idiocies. It's no wonder that the ratings for the 'bigger and better' American farce are so poor.
What a bunch of sad hypocrites!
Seriously Gravitule, it has been two years. Get the hell over it. No wonder people laugh at the coffee sending mentally unbalanced freaks who still bang on about Ianto. Shut up.
Ratings poor Will? Not really.
He's clearly missed though. A few months ago I was in Cardiff, and down at the Bay where they filmed the Torchwood Hub, fans have covered the gate that acted as the Hub entrance with pictures of Ianto - it's like a memorial to his character.
I really don't believe the reaction the makers wanted was for people to refuse to watch the show without him.
Yeah Emily, but it isn't 'fans' it is the same screwed up bunch of teenage girls and older women who should know better who are weirdly obsessed with gay couples on tv and just decided they loved Ianto, they stirred each other up, they wrote over the top lengthy rants and they are still going on. They need help. Torchwood is great, but it is just TV. They are so weird.
Johnboy and Getagrip
First of all, ratings ARE poor, maybe you should 'getagrip' on the fact that this show is crap. 1st episode got 819,000 viewers. 2nd episode got even less, 609,000. Oh, wait, you're right, they are not 'poor', they are pathetic ratings.
Second, how does wanting a beloved character that was eliminated for reasons that have NOTHING to do with 'drama' to be brought back mean that girls and older women are obsessed with gay couples? If all the complaints were about 'gay couples' we would all be happy even without Ianto since Jack is going to be 'slapping balls' (lovely phrase by Barrowman) with random male characters in MD.
I don't know why fans of a sci-fi show must be submitted to PORN and accused of wanting to see 'gay couples'.
I want Ianto back because he was an excellent character (and the new ones are not!) and I couldn't give a damn if he was or wasn't Jack's love interest. Like I don't give a damn about who's Jack is going to shag next.
I want a decent sci-fi show with decent characters. Not the mashup of 24 and the Benny Hills Show, as a review rightly described MD, with cheap and boring characters.
And yes, it's been two years since they killed off Ianto for nothing but apparently THEY are still talking about him, THEY are still using him to sell, THEY are still using Ianto in the radio plays, while at the same time they keep repeating us to forget him.
If this is not massive hypocrisy!
"It was exactly the reaction we hoped for and wanted," Barrowman assures the crowd. "It means you're committed."
Yes, but the commitment, which I've kept, is to NOT watch the show ever again. I don't think that's what they had in mind!
"It was exactly the reaction we hoped for and wanted," Barrowman assures the crowd.
So, you wanted me to not buy the CoE DVDs? You wanted me not to get any of the new books, nor the new audio plays? You wanted me to stop buying Torchwood merchandise?
You wanted me not to watch Torchwood: MD?
Well done, then.
Because I still am a Torchwood fan. I still am comitted. And that's exactly the reason why I don't bother with anything post season two.
Neither CoE nor MD is Torchwood. The Torchwood I loved died with CoE.
JohnBoy, your comment didn't made any sense. If the "women" as you labelled them watch only for "gay couples", they would watch Miracle Day with Jack shagging all those characters poping up. Obviously your comment sound much more incoherent than how you accuse them. Since you only saw Ianto as a "shag boy", I think it's you who only watch the show for gay couple!
"We, as a show, love that you are all passionate about the characters," Barrowman explains to fans. "He is still remembered and mentioned."
Yes and this is why they killed them all. Repetive, boring and give no purpose. Me, as a viewer, is the first show I watched where the casting (of Miracle Day) contradict what they said before without no constructive point.
Even Heroes made much more sense when they killed characters.
Oh and Getagrip, is it the only argument you can get? Get over it, get over it. Sound like a broken record.
