'Alphas' has solid premiere on Syfy; spend Sunday mornings with 'Mad Men'

alphas-syfy-320.jpgA healthy dose of TV snacks for your Tuesday, including casting news, ratings for "Torchwood's" premiere and more:

Syfy's new series "Alphas" drew pretty good ratings in its debut Monday night (July 11). The series averaged 2.5 million viewers, about half of whom fell in the adults 18-49 demographic. "Warehouse 13" (2.3 million) and "Eureka" (2 million) also put up decent numbers. [Syfy]

AMC will help you pass the time before "Mad Men" returns early next year by re-running the entire series in three-episode blocks on Sundays starting July 31. Downside: The blocks start at 6 a.m. ET, so you might want to set the DVR. [AMC]

James Wolk of "Lone Star" has picked up a recurring part on Showtime's "Shameless" as a guy who makes a connection with Fiona (Emmy Rossum). In other casting news, "The Killing's" Callum Keith Rennie has joined "The Firm" at NBC. [TV Line/Deadline]

"Torchwood: Miracle Day" got off to a solid start in its new home, drawing 1.5 million viewers in its Friday (July 8) premiere on Starz. That's on par with the premiere of "Camelot" earlier this year -- but we're guessing "Torchwood" fans are hoping it avoids "Camelot's" fate. [EW]

"Friday Night Lights" ends its run on NBC on Friday, but it will have an afterlife thanks to ESPN. Repeats will air on ESPN Classic and the new, Texas-centric Longhorn Network starting July 21. [New York Times]

ABC Family has picked up its comedy "Melissa & Joey" for a second season. The episodes airing now are part of Season 1; Season 2 will debut sometime next year. [ABC Family]

Former CBS "Early Show" anchor Harry Smith has joined NBC's Brian Williams-led prime-time newsmagazine. He'll be a correspondent for the show, which will debut in the 2011-12 season. [NBC]

I though "Alphas" was better when it was called "Misfits of Science".
