Emmys 2011: 'Mad Men,' 'Mildred Pierce' lead nominees; 'FNL,' 'Game of Thrones' break through

mad-men-s4-finale-500.jpg"Mad Men," "Modern Family" and "Glee" all scored big hauls at the Emmy nominations on Thursday, but some new faces broke into the party as well.

The final season of "Friday Night Lights" scored its first nomination for best drama series, and a pair of first-year HBO shows, "Boardwalk Empire" and "Game of Thrones," will compete for best drama as well. The best comedy category is more familiar, with "Parks and Recreation" the only show that wasn't nominated last year.

HBO's miniseries "Mildred Pierce" is the leading nominee overall with 21 nods, followed by "Mad Men" with 19. "Boardwalk Empire" snagged 18 nominations and "Modern Family" 17.

In addition to "FNL," "Thrones" and "Boardwalk Empire," "Mad Men," "Dexter" and "The Good Wife" are up for outstanding drama series. The outstanding comedy contenders are "30 Rock," "The Big Bang Theory," "Glee," "Modern Family," "The Office" and "Parks and Rec."

"Modern Family," incidentally, also snagged four of the six nominations for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy: Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet are all repeat nominees from last year, and Ed O'Neill joins them this time. Julie Bowen and Sofia Vergara scored nominations as well.

Also of note: Multiple Emmy-winning octogenarians Betty White ("Hot in Cleveland") and Cloris Leachman ("Raising Hope") were nominated for supporting actress in a comedy and guest actress in a comedy; four actors from FX's "Justified" -- Timothy Olyphant, Margo Martindale, Walton Goggins and Jeremy Davies -- earned acting nominations; and Matt LeBlanc, a three-time nominee for "Friends," earned a fourth nomination for playing himself in Showtime's "Episodes."

Melissa McCarthy, who announced the nominees with "Fringe's" Joshua Jackson, also scored a nomination for her role on "Mike & Molly."

The 63rd annual Primetime Emmys are set to air Sept. 18 on FOX.

What do you think of the nominations?

Once again Emmy voters are asleep on the job. I sometimes wonder if they bother to watch the shows they nominate since all they do is nominate the same ones over and over again. 30 Rock which is nowhere good as it once was, The Office again? There are other shows out there! What about Chuck or Psyche both of which are easily much funnier than 30 Rock. Emmy voters are just a bunch of sheep playing follow the leader. What chance have new shows got if they're not supported. And the last season of Ugly Betty not shown any love but then I don't know why I'm surprised...

When are these people going to learn that shows like "Nurse Jackie" and "The Big C" are NOT comedies? They are dramas!!
Putting them in the comedy category takes noms away from more deserving shows.
The same could be said in the Comedy Actress category. Drop Laura Linney and Edie Falco. Have these people not watched "The Middle" at all? Patricia Heaton is at the top of her game every week. Courtney Cox deserves to be there also. The actress from Mike & Molly is not even in the same universe as Heaton and Cox. Her being nominated is a joke and not a funny one.
A new category needs to be created for shows like "Nurse Jackie" and " They Big C". Until it is the comedy show and actress categories lose all credibility in my book.

Pretty predictive emmy nods. There are tonsssss of shows better than 30 rock now. Glad for Justified but no SOA love at all figures.

No Kyle Chandler? BOOOOOOO!!

Honestly I can accept most of this, but why, oh why do they keep showing Jon Cryer love?
I quite like the guy, but he just doesn't deserve this level of adjulation.

Hold up...I lied Kyle Chandler Woohoo!!! And Connie!!

Why would someone get a nomination for playing himself (Matt LeBlanc)?

In the least surprising bit of news, The Vampire Diaries was totally robbed.
