'Doctor Who': Matt Smith forecasts 'whoa' moments for River and the Doctor this season
Just before the "Doctor Who" crew revealed a chilling trailer for the second half of Season 6 during their Comic-Con panel, Zap2it caught up with the Doctor himself, Matt Smith.
And though the actor sticks to his on-screen love interest's (River Song, played by Alex Kingston) motto of "no spoilers," we did get a little bit out of him over what to expect from the Aug. 27 return episode, "Let's Kill Hitler."
"Alex Kingston is bloody brilliant in it," he gushed. "We learn a lot more about the Doctor and River as this latter part of the series goes on... and certainly by episode 13 there's a lot of 'whoa' moments."
So what will that mean for the Doctor's relationship with River's recently-revealed parents, Amy (Karen Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill). Well, you'll have to wait and see. But we will be seeing darker bits to Smith's Doctor.
"What's really interesting, i think, about the Doctor," he says, "particularly in these last moments of the series, we've explored seeing him really angry and exploring the darker tones of him. What's great about the Doctor is you can mix dark and light within the space of a sentence. He can go from A to Z like that."
[Insert charming, emphatic Matt Smith finger snap here.]
The character's growth and the show's constantly-increasing global presence is also one of the things that made him jump at the chance to sign up for Season 7.
"We're growing," he says. "I think the guys at BBC America have supported and invested in the show, [for] which I'm very grateful... We've got a long way to go, and hopefully we'll continue to grow."
Watch the full video interview above, which includes Smith's thoughts on the 50th anniversary and the hilarity that is Comic-Con.

I wish the show would move from BBC America to Syfy. I don't get BBC America, and I refuse to pay the large price for the DVD set (especially since the Matt Smith era has been mediocre and nowhere near as good as the David Tennant era).
I'm glad that 'syfy' doesn't have anything to do with the Dr., although that is where I 1st saw they show.
They would cancel it in a heartbeat and replace it with wrestling ghosts.
They sure wouldn't put any money into it.
If you have netflix, you can stream past seasons.
You want a network that changed its perfectly apt/descriptive name to something that makes no sense whatsoever just so they could trademark it to take over WHO? The network that cancels nearly every good show it makes, only to replace it with some of the worst dreck ever filmed -- dreck that makes many Roger Corman films have high production values in comparison?
We just have broadcast tv now -- we had to let go of our satellite courtesy of the idiots who run our city who can't balance a budget -- so I get my WHO as its released on DVD. (Note to BBC America -- hey, put series 1-5 on Blu-Ray, won't you?) But BBC America is a *stunning* channel, and if there were some way I could buy it and only it, I'd lay down my $ in a heartbeat. Even the news is five times better than our national network news.
As for the cost of the box sets, I think you don't know how to do comparative shopping. I've gotten all my DW sets for under $30 each, plus about $4 shipping.
