'Doctor Who': Karen Gillan talks Amy, River Song and 'the weirdest motherhood ever'
"Later" being right now.
The recent mid-season cliffhanger, which revealed Amy and Rory (Arthur Darvill) as the mother of fan-favorite River Song (Alex Kingston), was a particularly hot topic.
"That was as big a shock to me as it was to the audience," Gillan, who was in the dark until she read the script, tells Zap2it. "Alex Kingston knew the whole time, the sneak."
River and Amy haven't shared a great many scenes together in the past, but that will all change when the series returns on Aug. 7 with "Let's Kill Hitler." Gillan promises the first episode will pay a lot of attention to what she calls "the weirdest motherhood ever."
"Motherhood would change any woman, so it's definitely going to be the same for Amy," says Gillan. "We're just going to see that relationship really explored between River and Amy... It's not brushed over by any means."
As for her character's rapidly-evolving status on the show, Gillan also explains that she's wants to see Amy's storyline go well into the future.
"We met her as a child, we've seen her as a young woman, we've seen her run away in the Tardis, get married and now she's had a child," she says. "I would love to see her whole life play out, because we don't normally get that with a companion."
We don't. And with another third series set for Amy's travels with the Doctor, we just might.
