'Dallas': TNT teases its update of the classic soap
If there's one thing TNT wants you to take away from the teaser for its new version of "Dallas," it's this: The show is not a remake, just a continuation of the story that played out for 13 seasons from 1978-91 on CBS.
"Television's landmark drama returns," the voiceover intones on the teaser, which aired during "The Closer" on Monday night (July 11). Sure, there's been a 21-year break (not counting a couple of TV movies in the latter half of the '90s) since the last episode, but unlike, say, "Hawaii Five-0" or ABC's upcoming "Charlie's Angels," TNT is selling continuity with the old show.
Three prominent cast members from the original -- Patrick Duffy, Larry Hagman and Linda Gray -- are in the new series, which centers on J.R.'s (Hagman) son John Ross (Josh Henderson) and Bobby's (Duffy) adopted son Christopher (Jesse Metcalfe). And from the glimpses we get of them, the old hands haven't changed too much in the intervening years: Bobby's still conflicted about his family's legacy, and J.R. still wants everything he can get his hands on.
You'll have to wait until summer 2012 to see the full show, but we're guessing the next 12 months will include more teases of "Dallas." For now, what do you think of the teaser?

Cool!
I can't wait! So happy they used the old theme music in this.
However, I think they are promoting it way too early if the series starts next summer.
The think the teaser looks fantastic! I can't wait to see the new "Dallas." What made the teaser so tantalizing is that it appears the producers have been very faithful to the original series. I'd want no part of a next generation "Dallas." Without the presence of Hagman, Duffy, and Gray, it would not be "Dallas." And thankfully the producers decided against shooting on a new location to save money. That savings would have cost them millions of viewers because THE South Fork ranch is also one of the irreplacable characters of "Dallas." Another ranch in a state with a bigger tax rebate or even one in Vancouver would never have been accepted. Thankfully, all the pieces seem to have come together and I'll bet "Dallas" becomes a huge hit for TNT.
That was pretty brilliant. Very wise to use Bobby just as much as they used the kids. I also loved that J.R. was mostly silent only uttering enough words to remind us who's the boss! Best promo I've seen in ages.
I hope that Bobby, J.R, and Sue Ellen are used as much in the show and not just supporting characters to the new generation.
I can't wait to find out.
It won't be like the original because the standards have relaxed so much. All the implied sex in the old one will be right there on the screen - the language will be harsher. I just don't see it being the same - I see it as another program full of no-name young Hollywood actors.
But, I could be surprised...
Looks good to me !
It's not too soon to show the teazer to get some buzz going on about the show.
It builds up anticipation and support.
A year away--it's going to be a long wait but I'm sure it will be worth it!
I've missed JR!
looks great!! can't wait....why is this taking so long to get on the air...I was expecting a fall start or at the latest early 2012
Hope they can come up with new teasers and stuff regularly, otherwise a year IS too long a time to build up anticipation. People will be bored instead.
But it's wonderful to have Dallas back!
