'Dallas' remake gets the green light at TNT

dallas-tnt-cast.jpgJ.R. Ewing lives again.

TNT has greenlit its long-in-development remake of "Dallas," which will have a new cast but also feature the returns of several of the original series' stars, including Larry Hagman as J.R. Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray will also reprise their roles as Bobby and Sue Ellen Ewing.

"Dallas" will also star Josh Henderson ("90210"), Jesse Metcalfe ("Desperate Housewives," "Chase"), Jordana Brewster ("Fast Five," "Chuck"), Julie Gonzalo ("Eli Stone") and Brenda Strong ("Desperate Housewives"). Cynthia Cidre ("Cane," "The Mambo Kings") wrote the pilot and will executive produce with director Michael Robin ("The Closer," "Nip/Tuck").

The series won't premiere until next summer, but viewers can get their first look at the show Monday (July 11) during the season premieres of "The Closer" and "Rizzoli & Isles" on TNT.

The original "Dallas" aired from 1978-91 on CBS and was followed by a couple of TV movies, most recently "Dallas: War of the Ewings" in 1998. The new series will focus on J.R.'s son John Ross (Henderson; Omri Katz played the character for most of the original series) and Christopher (Metcalfe), Bobby's adopted son. They're involved in a love triangle over Elena (Brewster), even though Christopher's engaged to another woman, Rebecca (Gonzalo). Strong will play Bobby's wife, Ann.

The old "Dallas" was a giant hit for CBS, finishing as the No. 1 or No. 2 show on TV for five straight seasons in the 1980s. The infamous "Who shot J.R.?" episode in November 1980 was watched by an estimated 83 million people, making it the third most-watched episode of a scripted TV series in U.S. history (behind the finales of "M*A*S*H" and "Cheers").

Yay!

This needs to be on a broadcast network. So much of the audience for this show (remake or continuation) refuses, like me, to pay exorbitant cable fees, so we'll never see this. If nothing else, TNT needs to work out a weekly "2nd play" deal with a network, such as CW or even MyNet. Shoot, even syndicated. Just don't confine it to the comparatively few eyes tuned into TNT. The show is much bigger and better than that.

This sounds more like a "Dallas: The Next Generation" as opposed to a remake like with "Hawaii Five-0" or the upcoming "Charlie's Angels". That being said, I actually look forward to this one...hopefully they'll keep a lot of the Ewing history going and a nice reworking of that magnificent theme song. :-)

i am just glad that they arent putting that woman on that stuffed all the cocaine up sweet little andy gibb's nose

with that show being on the air for so long and it came back 3 times with movies,, there was no doubt that it would come back again and wow a new generation of viewers. TNT is on the right track with next year.

i don't want to wait until the summer. will larry hagman's 4 kidney's hold out?

Sooooooo excited, I can hardly wait.......

So looks what's coming back to the airwaves...interesting.

I cannot wait for this! Finally, something to look forward to on TV! Linda Gray looks smokin'STILL!

Agreed - Linda Gray still looks amazing! SO SO SO excited for Summer 2012 ... but here's hoping John Ross & Christopher don't keep the Ewing tradition of calling their parents "Mama & Daddy" alive. ;o)
