'Castle': Penny Johnson Jerald joins Season 4 as new captain of the 12th Precinct

Season 3 of "Castle" didn't just end with the shooting of Beckett (Stana Katic). Captain Montgomery (Ruben Santiago-Hudson) also took a bullet in the dramatic finale -- and unlike his subordinate, he won't be making a recovery.

So who's taking his place as the leader of the 12th Precinct and Beckett and Castle's (Nathan Fillion) boss? As TV Guide was first to report, the job will go to Penny Johnson Jerald.

A television fixture since the early '90s, the 50-year-old actress is probably best known for playing Beverly Barnes on HBO's "The Larry Sanders Show" and the ex-wife to "24" president David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert).

Jerald will play Victoria "Iron" Gates, a by-the-book, career-minded cop who has little experience actually working in the field. Her desire to move up the chain of command will see her being harsher on the team than Montgomery -- and likely not thinking too fondly of the special Castle/Beckett relationship.

We'll see exactly how that plays out when "Castle" returns to ABC, Monday, Sept. 19, at 10:00 p.m. ET.

I never get a fun vibe from her even when i am suppose to. Dont like this choice.

I would have loved it more if the new captain was younger to be the third wheel in the Caskett relationship. I mean, don't you just love to see Beckett getting jealous? Please guyz! Can Beckett have a major jealousy scene or much better if you could make it the jealousy reverberate throughout the season! :)

Not wild about the choice either. I'm getting real tired of all the cop shows...Mentalist, NCIS, Castle, etc...thinking they have to have some snotty, hardass chief running the show. Just have somebody they can run to with the paperwork, get them a warrant, or whatever, and let the main cast do their thing.

With Stana not doing the Castle panel at Comic-con BUT doing the Batman panel, the ratings being iffy and the loss of one of their better writers, I wonder if this is the swan song season for Castle.

They MUST address the will they crap with more than a fight between Castle and the boyfriend (already confirmed.)

The tension/dislike between Fillion and Stana could come to a boiling point...set your timers for the blind items to come flying.

Grace- There is no tension or dislike between Fillion and Katic. Why would there be. Rumors in the past arnt relevant now.

Okay it wasn't Jennifer Beals like I wanted I guess Pennys ok. Hope that sexual tension thing
twin Beckett and what'shis name is
less in the new season. Such a silly show. What PD would let a
book writer hang around for weeks
and months,and solve crimes better
than the cops. Unreal.

Ummm...@jer57ry, it's called "willing suspension of disbelief." Pretty much required if you're going to enjoy anything on television!

I've never seen this actress' work before and I suppose we need to give her a chance. With that said, and after reading this - I too do not feel a very good "vibe" about this change to the show. I hated losing Ruben/Montgomery. It made for a good story, but . . . . I never miss "Castle" and will continue of course to watch. I just pray they keep the "fun" in the show and so much of it is with the people of the 12th - that is why I've been a loyal viewer every single season.

I'm not very excited about this choice, either. Maybe it's because she's such a good actress that I dislike her from her role on 24 so intensely! But the idea of the tough bureaucratic captain seems so tired. Hope they'll give her some dimension - quickly.

Boo! bad choice - it's like a recipe now for these bosses on the cop shows. Same old song - different show. Yuck!
