'All My Children,' 'One Life to Live' to continue online after ABC finales

susan-lucci-getty.jpgThis is great news for soap fans, who were shocked this spring when ABC announced the cancellation of long-running daytime dramas "All My Children" and "One Life to Live."  On Thursday, ABC announced that they have licensed the shows to media company Prospect Park, giving them the option to continue the shows online.

The shows will continue to be produced, and additional episodes will be available on several platforms, including online formats and internet-enabled televisions.

"We are privileged to continue the legacy of two of the greatest programs to air on daytime television, and are committed to delivering the storylines, characters and quality that audiences have come to love for over 40 years. 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' are television icons, and we are looking forward to providing anytime, anywhere viewing to their loyal community of millions," Prospect Park said in a statement.

"'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' are iconic pieces of television history that captivated millions of fans since their beginning over 40 years ago," adds ABC Daytime president Brian Frons. "Each of the shows have made an indelible mark on our culture's history and informed our consciousness in their own way. We are so glad Prospect Park has assumed the mantel for these shows and that they will continue for the fans."

Agnes Nixon, the creator of both the series, is excited about the new opportunity. ""I'm just so happy that ABC found a home where the legacies of 'All My Children' and 'One Life to Live' can continue. I'm excited for their future with Prospect Park," she says. "It takes a lot of living to make a soap opera a serial, and the wonderful teams on both shows have done just that. Together, we are a big family that keeps going, and I'm looking forward to working alongside these wonderful people as we ensure that the shows will continue with all the love and excitement we've always had. I also am so happy for our loyal fans, whom we love so much, and who have been so supportive over the last 40 plus years."

The final ABC episode of "All My Children" is scheduled to air on Sept 23, while "One Life To Live's" ABC run will end in January 2012.

Just one question... what does this mean for Susan Lucci's possible "Desperate Housewives" gig?

If the reason they are canceling soaps are because of the costs, how will switching to an online format make them more profitable?

I am really glad to see These two shows are going to continue on. I will be watching.

I have a feeling that online fans will make the leap to watch them online. The money will come from a possible subscription services OR commercials that daytime watchers have been skipping over for decades. It will make money, but I'm not sure if it will make back the money that is spent. Maybe in international markets.

If they do a subscription service, I will not pay. I wouldn't pay for anything on the net. Haven't paid for soaps since day 1 and I am not going to start now.

Bababooey! Bababooey! Howard Stern's penis!

hoover save soaps i know greedy disney would back down with theme park down cartoon movie flop i guest bigger wags took over wb save v

Isn't this going to put quite a kink in the story arc as it now stands? I mean there is only 1 more month of filming. AMC has written characters out, brought other back from the dead, some are reported to be appearing in "heaven" to take characters that are being killed off to the "other side". How is this going to mesh?

I am not upgrading my bandwidth to watch One Life to Live online . I don't watch any Tv shows online . So One Life to Live still ends in January for me .

i am not paying too but there are saying its hulu youtube clone most of it is free network is were bad tv is with the reality garbage cable and online has the good shows i guest that the future

I have been watching AMC since the day it began. I would continue watching online, but only if the characters remain the same. I have no interest in seeing new characters in the title roles
