'Whale Wars': Sea Shepherd takes the battle back to the high seas

whale-wars-season-4-320.jpgA new season of "Whale Wars" debuted on Animal Planet Friday night (June 3), and it showcased a more aggressive Sea Shepherd resuming its battle to end whaling -- provided the equipment holds up.

Part of the drama in the season premiere was whether one of Sea Shepherd's ships, the Bob Barker (named after the "Price Is Right" host and animal activist), is still up to the hunting-whale-hunters task. (Spoiler: It is.) The crusaders eventually come upon a fleet of Japanese whaling ships, but rough weather in the Southern Ocean doesn't allow for a direct confrontation.

Sea Shepherd is calling this season "Operation No Compromise," and founder Paul Watson sets the tone in the clip below. A skeptical reporter asks if he really thinks he can end whaling, and he replies, "You can't stop slavery -- that's what they said once."

Take a look at the opening of "Whale Wars." Are you watching? Do you agree with Sea Shepherd's mission and methods?

GO WHALERS!!!

test

Spoiler Alert!

It looks more and more like this will be the final season of Whale Wars. The Sea Shepherd crew was very successful this year, causing the Japanese whalers to give up and go home several weeks early. They took less than a third of their whale quota and have indicated that they probably won't return to the Southern Ocean next year.

I think more terrorists should get their own shows. I really like shrimp, I think I'll harass and risk the lives of others to save this noble sea spider.

It will suck when they come out shooting lead not water hoses for the high sea terrorists. A terrorists is a terrorists even in the best of term.

Japan might be ready to give up. Then again, the industry is so lucrative, it will be very tempting for them to take a year off and try again next year.

If that doesn't happen, there's a rumor the Russians will try to take over the Antarctic waters. From a ratings standpoint, that would send Animal Planet into the stratosphere because the Russians are nuts.

Of course, it would be a hell of a lot more dangerous. Russia considers bucylic acid to be a form of chemical warfare, meaning they could respond with pepper spray and tear gas. And I wouldn't put it past them to use their own fast attack boats to go after the Bob Barker and Steve Irwin. Plus, during the Cold War, Russian warships deliberately rammed American warships. Imagine what they'd do to the anti-whalers.

@ ChocolateJeebus

How incredibly stupid to compare intelligent endangered whales to shrimp.

Whales are sentient, self-aware beings, capable of experiencing suffering on a scale not possible with shrimp.

Animals are not created equal.

Is there really any viable source to the Japanese numbers of whales taken? Couldn't they "play dead" and continue their hunting more effectively by appearing to be beaten?

seashepherds!!!You are doing great work!!!

go captain paul,, sunk those stupid research ships,,
