'The Office': James Spader in talks to join the cast

james-spader-the-office.jpgJames Spader did a memorable guest turn on the season finale of "The Office" -- so memorable that he might be back next season as the new boss.

And we when we say boss, we mean something more than just Michael Scott's replacement.

According to EW, Spader is in talks to join the NBC series as not just the branch manager of Dunder Mifflin's Scranton office, but the new CEO of parent company Sabre. The idea is to have him take over for Kathy Bates, whose commitment to "Harry's Law" will likely preclude her from making more guest appearances as Jo Bennett.

Spader's very Spader-like turn on the finale of "The Office" as one of several candidates interviewing for Michael's (Steve Carell) old job made him a front-runner among many fans, although the show's writers reportedly favored another guest star, Catherine Tate. Having Spader's character, Robert California, higher up in the company could potentially let the show have it both ways.

The likely scenario, EW says, would have Spader's character taking over the Scranton branch in the season premiere. He soon decides, however, that he wants something bigger and talks his way into the CEO job.

Unlike previous higher-up characters such as Bates' Jo Bennett, he'd be around pretty much every week. That would also leave the door open for the show to bring in another new character as the new branch manager (or install someone who's already there).

What do you think of the idea? Would Spader be a good fit for "The Office"?

I stand by my vote for Andy as manager of the Scranton branch.

Spader was the best of those that "interviewed". I would love it.

i loved his character choices for the finale - i'd love to see him flesh it out even more - he's really turned into quite a good actor - remember that hair in PRETTY IN PINK?

They need someone who can improve, and who better then one of the three who were on "Whose Line Is It Anyway." They would be perfect! Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, or Colin Mochrie.

Anybody that saw Spader KILL IT on The Office knows he is perfect. Lauren...Andy? Come on! Did you see Spader?

I would watch anything with James Spader

I think James Spader would be great! I would actually re-start watching The Office with him in it. I'm so glad Carell is gone.

Noooo. The office has always been known for awkward moments, but Spader was just too much (and I'm a Spader fan). I think that the episodes after Michael left were some of the best of the season because it really became an ensamble. I think they need to cast someone not too popular with the average viewer like Catherine Tate. In that way, there wouldn't be someone like Spader thinking the show would revolve around him as the biggest name. I couldn't take a whole show each week of that character.

Come on, Spader was able to control Dwight Schrute! None of the other members could have handled him like Michael Scott and now Spader's Character. It's a good fit. Also, he's only done one episode, how would you know if the character doesn't evolve into something even more hilarious. So far the last 2 series Spader was on, he was freaking amazing on! I wonder if they'll bring in Shatner too, Denny Crane, I'm Cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs! Hahaha

They haven't figured out who is going to be the manager at DM yet?!!?!!
