'So You Think You Can Dance' results: Iveta, Missy, Wadi and Nick head home

sytycd-top-20-2.jpgThe first time out of the gate, all 20 "So You Think You Can Dance" season 8 contestants got a reprieve -- all made it to week two. But, that mercy really only delayed the inevitable. On Thursday's (June 23) show, four dancers faced elimination.

Missy and Wadi, who danced a cha-cha -- well out of street dancer Wadi's wheelhouse -- were the first to end up in the bottom three. Good thing Wadi got that offer to move in with guest judge Debbie Reynolds. Next up, Iveta and Nick, who kind of drew the short straw with Wednesday's Bollywood routine. Finally, Ryan and Ricky -- whose performance was somewhat eclipsed by Ryan's post-dance wardrobe malfunction.

Just for kicks, let's compare to last week's bottom seven dancers (seven because Mitchell was unable to perform thanks to a bum elbow): Mitchell, Jordan, Tadd, Clarisse, Jess, Miranda and Robert.) Totally different -- meaning it is so early in the competition it's still anyone's game. At least for another few minutes.

Time for a break from the tension with a number from dance troupe Rage Crew.  These pint-sized dancers sporting bustiers and leather -- sorry -- totally put Willow Smith to shame in the moves department.

On to the dance-off:

Wadi -- the guy who had never partnered before hitting the "So You Think You Can Dance" stage -- returns to his wheelhouse, hip-hop, with a gravity defying performance.

Missy opts for a sort of fierce contemporary-meets-pop and lock-meets-burlesque routine. We're not sure it did her any favors.

Nick, our tap dancer, brings down the house -- and when we say brings down, we mean dampens the enthusiasm with a ho-hum tap routine.

Iveta, the resident ballroom dancer, totally rocks it out with a solo samba that can only be described as hot tamale train maeterial.

Next up, Ricky turns in an utterly athletic (and topless) performance that convinces us he's for real.

Finally, Ryan -- she of the perma-grin -- turns in a scattered performance that is 90 percent hair-ography and about 10 percent choreography. We're slightly worried, but she seems to be a judges' favorite so we'll see.

LMFAO -- a younger, kind of hipper take on the Black Eyed Peas perform their hit "Party Rock Anthem." We totally lost our mind and had a good time. Must've been the guy who dances with a box on his head or the fire extinguisher prop.

Time for the bad news, as delivered by Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and cutie-pie Debbie Reynolds.

First the girls: Ballroom dancer Iveta, who fought her way to the top 20 three years in a row, and Missy, head home. Ryan -- who Nigel admits didn't really dance to save her life -- stays in the competition.

Then the guys: Wadi may have to take Debbie Reynolds up on that offer after all, because he's out. As is Nick, the tapdance kid, who joins his partner Iveta in leaving the show. Ricky, Ryan's partner, stays.

That's it until next week.

I'm really disappointed at the results. I think the judges got it wrong with the women - no way Yveta should have been sent home. Ryan has no personality, and her dance tonight was just o.k. Yveta's dance was dynamo. I'm fine with the outcome for the guys, but I'm really bummed about the women. Damn!

Neither Iveta nor Nick should have gone home tonight. They were the only ones that gave this season some dance diversity. Now we are stuck with Contemporary and Hip Hop...ugh.

ITA with Melvin. It looks like I just got three hours a week back.

The four who went home this week (ESPECIALLY my favorite Nick) were essentially eliminated by factors out of their control. Had someone been eliminated last week (and I personally felt that none of last weeks bottom 7 were good enough to warrant an NEL), Nick could very well still be in it, and I thought he was one of the few memorable contestants this season.

Ivita and Nick should have stayed-- both are so watchable, and one of the strongest synchronized pairs, and diverse. Dunno what the wow is about Ryan, though I must admit Ricky outdanced everyone in the solo. Mitchell needs to go, as does Ryan. Nick Iveta were robbed.

Question...

If the decision who was going home was truly made in the last 10 minutes of the show, how would they have had time to prepare a taped package of the two guys and two girls sent home. Unless they had one ready for all 3 combinations of who would be saved? I don't know, makes me think they knew all along who was going home.

Iveta and Nick were my favorite from the show. I'm so sad they were eliminated :(

Daisy Thu 06/23/11 11:10 PMI would WAY rather have had some of the contestants from last week leave than Nick this week. They should have sent Jordan home last week and kept Iveta this week. The judges totally screwed themselves out of eliminating some talented (and different) dancers because they had to eliminate 4 this week instead of just sucking it up and eliminating 2 last week. What a crock.

Viola Irvin Thu 06/23/11 11:15 PMI’m honestly was not a fan of any of the female contestants in the bottom three, but still super mad Ryan was the one who was saved. Going into tonight i was loving Wadi and Nick, but Ricky’s danced for his life so can’t be mad at Nigel for keeping Ricky, although I was secretly still rooting for Nick.

pk Thu 06/23/11 11:21 PMAn Open Letter to Mr. Lythgoe:
Thank you very much for rendering America’s opinion worthless last week. I have been watching this show since its inception and have thoroughly enjoyed the varieties of dancers and choreography this show has provided. However, this show should be renamed to So You Think You Can Dance Contemporary. The decision not to cut of one of the bottom 3 couples last week was completely unfair to the contestants who work so damn hard to make it on to your show. You had a good formula the past seasons and today you have incensed the public by voting off 4 dancers, who were quite fantastic and keeping Ryan, who is the poster child for your newly named show and represents nothing of what America is. Bring back the Benjis, Donyelles, Pashas, Hok, Sabras, Twitches and Joshuas who have made this the most awesome show on television. Keep this show about the passion of dance because that is why we all watch it. Dance is a language and even if its not technically correct it conveys messages and emotions in which we connect with. Please keep in mind that we fall in love with dancers for not just skill but for grace, presence, humility and performance. All of which Alex Wong had. I implore you Mr. Lythgoe to keep intact the integrity of your show and bring back style, swag and soul.

I thought last nights camera shots of the dancing seemed much improved over the last years of this show. It was so enjoyable to watch. Tonight it is back to the TOTALLY ANNOYING FLASHING AROUND! It ruins the show for me. Don't do a close up when the dancers are doing amazing footwork. And then flash to shots so far back we can see the audience and not what the performers are doing. I don't want to see the audience or judges when the dancers are performing. Please hold the camera still, focused on the dancers.

I waited three years to see Iveta back on the show. Nigel was so disrespectful to her. He's compared her unfavorably to one of his favorites Anya..of Anya/Pasha. The best Anya/Pasha did in any major dance competition was a fourth place in NYC. Iveta was one of the three best dancers ever to appear on SYTYCD along with Danny Tidwell and Alex Wong. Major loss..lost interest in the show this year. I boycotted the first year Iveta was cut too.
